Happy Friday, Everyone! You know when you find something cool online, and then you look a little closer and realize that you’ve stumbled upon a gold mine?! This is one such occasion, thanks to a website called Acrylic Home Design. I’ve made no secret of my love for all things acrylic, from dining sets to tables and desks. But when I came across the Acrylic Home Design site, it was crystal clear that the ’80s-style possibilities for this transparent material are absolutely mind blowing. And there are oodles of acrylic items big and small at our fingertips!
’80s Interior Design Profile: Maitland-Smith
This fall at Mirror80, we’ve fallen in love with the work of furniture designer Maitland-Smith. The company is still very active today, but we’re particularly drawn to the ’70s and ’80s pieces created by Maitland-Smith. And just what are the signature traits of these fine furnishings? Brass accents, tessellated stone that covers the each piece in seamlessly applied squares, and Deco-style geometric shapes. Not to mention, a color palette of cream, coral, peach and black adds an elegant touch, making these creations sleek rather than garish. Today we’ve assembled a collection of our favorites, available for purchase via 1stdibs. Read on for more details…
Chic 1980s Furniture Finds
This weekend while I was having fun with the Mirror80 Pinterest boards, I couldn’t help but notice one important fact: 1stdibs is an amazing treasure trove for high-end ’80s furniture! If you’re a serious collector, you’re in luck. And if you’re not, you can still probably find some good deals (or at least a splurge or two). Hey, at any rate, you can plan your dream home by making collages out of the amazing images…like we did today! Enjoy! We call it “Golden Girls meets ’80s Modern”…
Memphis-Milano Monday!
Hi Everyone! This weekend I completed Part I of the latest Retro Foodie photo shoot. And yes, it’s Memphis-Milano inspired. You can see a sneak preview with the plate of donuts above. What’s better than donuts covered with chocolate icing? Donuts covered with chocolate icing and sprinkles! In fact, the sprinkle motif is the inspiration for today’s montage. We’re sure you’ll enjoy all of the tasty, colorful goodness. Stay tuned for the rest of the photo shoot images on Wednesday. In the meantime, enjoy today’s pics, which prove that whether you’re talking about furniture, art or food, great design in delicious!
Yuppies, Metallic Planters and Glass Cabinets…
Happy Monday, Everyone! This weekend I prepared for Mirror80’s latest Retro Foodie photo shoot, which will take place later today. The theme: Yuppie Cocktail Hour! I tested out the recipes yesterday, and my hubby and I enjoyed a swanky dinner of appetizers last night. Today I’ll be preparing the appetizers one more time, photographing them, then having my Mom over for lunch to celebrate the end of the shoot by gobbling up the goods. But first I wanted to share with you some weekend highlights…
’80s Teal Power
Happy Friday, Everyone! We’re commemorating the end of the week by reveling in teal finds with ’80s flair. It’s been fun watching this color make a comeback. In the 1980s, it was often paired with peach and mauve. Today we see it juxtaposed with black and crisp white, or accented with brights such as yellow and orange. We love the teal pieces above because of their ’80s style. Can you find trendier items for sale? Sure. But this post celebrates the past as much as the present…
A New Retro Design Vignette in Dreamy Hues
This week we’re reveling in candy colors and dreamy motifs. Today we present a vignette of contemporary items that can’t help but ooze New Retro style, with a heavy focus on 1980s flair. Isn’t it amazing that you can piece together an ’80s-style interior with entirely new items? We think so!
The Apartment of Interior Designer Rafael de Cárdenas
A month ago we featured the work of interior designer Rafael de Cárdenas of Architecture at Large. Not only does de Cárdenas delight in ’80s geometric motifs, he is an ardent proponent of color! You can imagine how delighted we were to stumble upon Sight Unseen and their in-depth tour of de Cárdenas’ New York apartment! Perhaps what we love most is the way the designer integrates the ’80s into his spaces while maintaining his own sense of style. Above we see a 1980s sculpture that de Cárdenas found at his grandmother’s house.
’80s Redux: Black Marble
Today we spotlight an ’80s trend that has found its way back into our design vocabulary: black marble. After the 1980s, many black marble finds were dismissed as the stuff of bachelor pads or Vegas bathrooms. Think again, folks. Today we’ve gathered a range of black marble furnishings to fit a variety of price points. We start high with the 1970s black marble coffee table above, available for $2900 through Metro Retro Furniture. The cylindrical base and marble top give the piece its modern form. She’s a beauty!
Acrylic Dining Sets
One look at the furniture featured in today’s post, and you may assume these pieces are straight out of the ’80s. Strangely, even the pictures have a retro quality. To everyone’s surprise, these acrylic dining sets from Muniz Plastics are brand spanking new…honestly, we’re a bit confused, but it’s a blissful fog! ’80s-style Deco furniture is being manufactured once again?! We should throw a party and bring our crystal swans to decorate the tabletops!
