Reflecting on recent retro style
Well, it’s been a minute!
This year we’re keeping our “Thanksgiving table” simple with a fall picnic and fresh food.
A post on learning to run the race, even if you’re still figuring it all out…
Today’s post is about pasta. And unpredictability.
As we look back at Mirror80’s first year in the blogosphere, we’re revisiting some of our favorite posts. Today the focus is Friday Video Picks, those ’80s music videos that have captured our attention. We’ve blogged about many of them over the past year. Here are our five all-time favorites.
It’s been one of the hottest summers on record. What better way to cool off than by reveling in the “marine chic” style of the 1984 hit film Splash, starring Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks? Before there was Ariel, there was Madison…
In our last post, we celebrated the Memphis-Milano influence on Christian Diors Fall-Winter Haute Couture Collection. From candy colors to edgy geometry, the ’80s motifs were abundant on the catwalk. But if you thought the ’80s fun ended there, think again!
Mirror80 just can’t stop ogling Christian Dior’s Fall-Winter Haute Couture Collection. Not only do these fashion treasures put a modern twist on the already-modern Memphis-Milano design style that boldly emerged in the 1980s, it features alluring updates, from geometric form-hats and candy-hued eyeshadow to strappy sandals with shape-clustered heels. What’s truly amazing is the way Dior integrated the Memphis Group’s signature patterns, colors and textures with its cutting edge fashion. The Memphis Group design collective DID create jewelry and clothing, but who would’ve thought that motifs also seen on lamps, vases and tables would make it on to the runway in 2011? Then again, it isn’t THAT unexpected…
Geometry and color highlight this 1984 video for Howard Jones’ hit single “Like to Get to Know You Well.” The sleeve of the single featured the phrase “Dedicated to the original spirit of the Olympic Games,” although the song was not officially affiliated with the Olympics. Throughout the ’80s, Jones combined optimistic lyrics with synthpop to form a unique style that garnered him a string of hits.
If you’re a fan of Memphis-Milano design, perhaps you’ve noticed the candy colors, irresistible forms and texture-based patterns that items from this influential movement boast. In fact, the Memphis Group, a Milan-based collective of furniture and product designers formed in 1981, introduced its own brand of shocking color and geometry. Designers like Michele De Lucchi, Thomas Bley, and Ettore Sottsass put their creative stamp on the movement, as shown in the image above.
This summer at Mirror80, we are committed to helping you get away from it all. Who doesn’t need a break from the hustle and bustle of life? Whether you’re staying at a 5-star hotel on your summer vacation or simply want to add a few touches of elegance and relaxation to your daily routine, let 1980s TV series Hotel inspire some decadent glamour.
For today’s Friday Video Pick, we bring you this classic from glam metal band Ratt. The video for this 1984 hit was just as memorable as the song, featuring a wealthy family enjoying a dinner party while band members disrupt the flow of the evening by performing in the family’s attic. A subversive metal head butler, a dinner serving of live rodents and a young woman’s transformation from a dutiful dinner party-goer to a rodent-like punk are highlights of this piece.
In last week’s ’80s photo shoot post, a metal shelf was covered in 1980s Deco ceramics and highlighted by berry-toned art paper backing. Needless to say, some love and preparation went into this shoot, from the color choice of the ceramics to the over-the-top floral arrangement. But the shelf’s final design evolution wasn’t quite as, well…pastel. Let’s take a look at the journey of this metal furniture piece, taking note of two different ways to bring ’80s design to today’s home…
“Pack your bags, and leave tonight…” Yeah, you’ll be singing it too in a few minutes! To tell you the truth, I’ve been waiting months to share this video as a Friday Video Pick.
