Happy Monday, Everyone! With last week’s surgery behind me, I’m now officially ready for the holidays! Stay tuned for some fun blog posts in the coming days, from the Mirror80 Gift Guide to a book release from one of our favorite ’80s insiders. I thought I’d start the week by sharing some pics with you. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at my place, and I’ve had fun decking the halls and the walls with retro-style decor that complements the space. Geometric art is abundant in our living room, so we wanted a tree with bright ornaments that celebrate the whimsy of ultra-colorful ’80s design. We enjoyed creating a timeless modern look that fit our home…

BUT many of our readers are DIYers–people who roll up their sleeves and get creative on a regular basis. And now is the time to start gathering what you need for the holiday season, deciding what to make and what to buy, and possibly even pulling out that box of Christmas decorations at the end of the week. So today we shine the spotlight on new decor with the potential to go retro…
Tips for Shopping Retro at Garage Sales
Today we share the final piece in our series on bargain shopping for retro treasures. So far we’ve shined the spotlight on the world of antique festivals, estate sales, antique malls and thrift stores. This post is devoted to that early morning event known as the garage sale! Why we love them: While you sometimes run into people selling their possessions for hundreds of dollars (“That’s what I paid for it!”), most of the time the desire to get rid of excess clutter results in some amazing bargains. Here are our tips for making the most of your Saturday morning…
How to Shop Retro at an Antique Mall
This weekend was very rainy in Austin, TX. So my plan to hit a string of garage sales was thwarted…but that didn’t stop me from heading over to one of my favorite antique malls in search of 1980s finds! This month, Mirror80 is featuring a series of posts on shopping for retro decor. First we tackled the tent-filled world of antique shows. Next we talked estate sales. Today we’re focusing on the booth-studded wonder of antique malls! Who doesn’t love the comfort of air conditioning and the thrill of row after row of well-stocked spaces? Read on for more details…
Retro Foodie: A Fall Snack Break
Happy Fall! It’s Saturday–time to slow down… What better way to take a break from the weekday grind than with a fall snack break?! Retro-style, of course! I bought some vintage ’80s mugs and filled them with hot chocolate. Then I baked a spice cake. Whether you’re into baking or you like to purchase your sweets, take a break from it all this October and remind yourself that it’s fall. And that sometimes it’s OK to stop and savor life’s treats…
So Sottsass!
I have artist Dominic Joyce to thank for this post! Last week he brought today’s featured installation to my attention… London decor retailer Darkroom is currently honoring the work of Memphis-Milano designer Ettore Sottsass with an in-store tribute featuring a limited edition collection. The participants include the likes of Studiopepe, Jamie Julien-Brown, Stone Theatre and more. Titled “So Sottsass,” the installation includes upscale items such as marble trays, totem lights and hand painted ceramics, along with more affordable offerings such as wrapping paper. Check out the delicious finds below…
Retro Foodie: Mirror80’s 3rd Birthday!
Last weekend we celebrated Mirror80’s 3rd birthday, and today I wanted to share some of the details with you… Let’s start with the inspiration for the party! Perhaps you saw our mood board celebrating colorful ’80s design, which featured bold geometry, ’80s modern art and an overall festive look (think colorful balloons, ribbons and contemporary flair). Then we pointed you to our Pinterest board for the party, complete with a Confetti and Color theme! We brought the party to life with some of our own unique details, like the Boston cream pie you see above, topped with colorful confetti sprinkles. Read on for more details…
Planning Mirror80’s 3rd Birthday Party…
We at Mirror80 love a good party! Especially a foodie party… With Mirror80’s 3rd birthday on the horizon, we thought we’d commemorate the event with a confetti- and color-themed bash. With influences ranging from Memphis-Milano style to ’80s yuppie culture, the party possibilities are endless. Our biggest sources of inspiration have been simple and timeless 1980s party decorations (of the colorful variety), as well as ’80s modern abstract art.
New Retro Weekender: Tropical Temptations
Hi Everyone! I hope this message finds you enjoying a wonderful Sunday. As you can see from today’s pics, I’m enjoying all of the tropical possibilities the weekend has to offer… And it’s kind of amazing how the tropical aesthetic will forever have ’80s connotations. Which is why in this edition of New Retro Weekender we’re featuring a few tropical temptations to jazz up your summer!
An Iris and Lily Mood Board
Today we’re immersing ourselves in the ’80s iris and lily phenomenon! Ceramics, flowers, clothing and jewelry–this floral Deco look put its stamp on many a product in the decade of decadence. And the look is inspiring our latest Retro Foodie event, which is shaping up to be a glamorous take on 1980s floral style. I’ve put together a mood board to cement the theme, and I can’t help but start with the Mikasa plate at the top left of the montage, which is a gift from my friend Kat. Thanks to Kat for getting the ball rolling! Enjoy today’s montage, and stay tuned for our next Retro Foodie post in June, complete with recipes and decor…
