Happy Monday, Everyone. Hope your weekend was fun and relaxing! Mine was both chill and productive. As you can see from the image above, I’m starting to plan this year’s Christmas decorations, and you can bet I’m drawing inspiration from the 1980s. I’ll be hosting a Christmas shindig that features 80s-style holiday decor and sharing the pics with you at the beginning of December. If the crazy-early Christmas decorations at retail establishments have already put you in the holiday mood, check out some Mirror80 pics from Christmases past.

Friday Video Pick: “State of the Heart” by Rick Springfield
Rick Springfield has made some amazing contributions to ’80s music video history. Elaborate, dynamic and drama-filled, his videos are as catchy as his pop songs. But today we focus on a more contemplative piece, the 1985 hit “State of the Heart.” In fact, the song was originally recorded in 1980 by Australian group Mondo Rock. But Rick puts his own spin on it, complete with a video featuring flowing water, rose petals and a very Zen set. With a touch of marble for an ’80s effect, of course!
KINZO’s Microchip Light Installation
When you think of 1980s interior design, images of cylinder coffee tables and black lacquer headboards may come to mind. And while we hesitate to interrupt that wonderfully glossy vision, we love how today’s light installation created by Berlin-based design trio KINZO mixes modern decor with ’80s inspiration.
The Apartment of Interior Designer Rafael de Cárdenas
A month ago we featured the work of interior designer Rafael de Cárdenas of Architecture at Large. Not only does de Cárdenas delight in ’80s geometric motifs, he is an ardent proponent of color! You can imagine how delighted we were to stumble upon Sight Unseen and their in-depth tour of de Cárdenas’ New York apartment! Perhaps what we love most is the way the designer integrates the ’80s into his spaces while maintaining his own sense of style. Above we see a 1980s sculpture that de Cárdenas found at his grandmother’s house.
The Work of Architecture at Large
Today we’re thrilled to spotlight the work of Rafael de Cárdenas, founder of Architecture at Large, a resource for design vision and execution focused on residential and commercial interiors, architecture, furniture and integrated objects. Stunning color and bold geometry are key qualities of Architecture at Large pieces and interiors. We can’t help but see undertones of 1980s Memphis-Milano motifs!
Whit Stillman’s Metropolitan
In honor of acclaimed indie director Whit Stillman’s new film Damsels in Distress, we travel back to the year 1990 and revisit his very first movie, the beloved Metropolitan. The plot is simple: a group of upper class college students on winter break navigate the social waters of New York’s debutante season. Long, puffy formal wear and Upper East Side apartments reflecting late ’80s elegance are screen staples, and an amazing script (written by Stillman) earned this gem of a film an Oscar nomination.
Acrylic Furniture Finds
I recently started a new gig writing for the online design magazine Decoist. The site features interesting architecture and interior design finds, how-to advice for maintaining a stylish home, exciting new products, and collections of design strategies and ideas. I wanted to share one of my recent Decoist articles with Mirror80 readers–a piece on the wonders of acrylic furniture. Many acrylic finds have an ’80s Modern look, and the beauty of these clear furnishings is their versatility.

Friday Video Pick–DIY Makeover Edition: “Brand New Girl” by Julie Brown

Stylistically, the film channels that magical blend of Mid-Century style and ’80s Modern flair. In the video for “Brand New Girl,” characters dance around a beauty shop that combines elements of 1950s decor and 1980s motifs a la Memphis-Milano design. Let the film’s sets inspire you and the makeover mood empower you to embrace DIY magic in the realms of interior design and fashion.
