Hi Everyone! It’s been a little while since our last Retro Foodie post. Yes, we’re planning the next installment of our ’80s-style culinary series, which is as much about creating amazing tablescapes as it is about the food. This month we present a pastel party! The photo shoot is this coming weekend, and we’ll be posting the pics next week. For now, we’d like to share our mood board, as well as the inspiration for the foodie fun. A Villeroy & Boch dishware pattern from the 1980s and an eye-catching recipe for ice cream squares started it all. Read on for more candy-colored details…

The Beauty of an Abandoned Mall
For quite some time now, I’ve been completely obsessed with shopping malls built in the 1980s. Some are still going strong, like the mall a few miles from my home. I often walk around this two-story building, reveling in pockets of retro goodness, thanks to department stores that haven’t remodeled since the decade of decadence. Then there are the abandoned malls, like another one close to home that’s increasingly closed off, thanks to an upcoming project that will likely destroy any remaining traces of the ‘80s.

3 Glitzy Oscar Party Ideas
Anyone watching the Oscars this Sunday? I’m a bit of a film enthusiast… I never miss a South by Southwest Film Festival, and I totally nerded out in high school and college while studying film by watching movies during my free time and taking notes. I love the Academy Awards, especially since it combines film with a chance to entertain–one of my other passions. So it makes sense that over the course of Mirror80’s history, I’ve put together a few photo shoots for party concepts that can double as Oscar night fetes. Today we look back at the top 3. Enjoy!
The Ceramic Art of Alison Brent
Today we celebrate the work of talented ceramic artist Alison Brent, who began creating marble-motif masterpieces well before marble became trendy again. Furniture knobs, t-lights, coasters and table lamps are a few of the artist’s many offerings. Our favorite part: the way sleek marble finishes combine with candy colors such as hot pink, bright yellow and mint green. Read on for more fabulous finds…
A Geometric Cabinet Makeover
Happy Tuesday, Everyone! Hope your weekend was a fabulous! I spent much of the weekend painting cabinets, so… I thought I’d share the beginnings of my laundry room makeover with you. My hubby and I moved into our place this past summer, and we’ve been working on each room little by little. After we made some changes such as replacing the bathroom countertops, we had to put other purchases on hold. Such as a washer and dryer. Well, the time has come to finally make these appliances our own. And it’s also time to stop neglecting our laundry room!

Our Favorite Posts of 2013
Happy New Year, Everyone! Before launching into the festivity of 2014 (there are some exciting things planned here at Mirror80), I wanted to take a minute and reflect on our favorite posts of 2013. Last year brought some delicious new developments, such as our Retro Foodie series, which explores creative ways to incorporate late ’70s-early ’90s design into your food and entertaining adventures. Another fun development: finally getting a new camera, which took our photo shoots up a notch. More fun to come in that department, but until then, here’s a look back at some of our favorite moments of the past year. Don’t forget to click on the links to view the full posts…
A Retro New Year’s Eve Party
Hi, Everyone! Can you believe it’s almost 2014? What are your New Year’s Eve plans? My hubby and I were thinking of throwing a party… But over the course of the last month or so, we’ve dealt with our fair share of chaos, including a car accident and a surgery. So going out to eat, then coming back home to toast the New Year in a low-key fashion sounded just right to us this year. But that didn’t stop me from staging a Retro Foodie photo shoot in honor of the upcoming holiday. And this vignette will also work for an awards show party (hey, the Golden Globes and the Oscars are on the horizon). So read on for all the details…
Happy Holidays
Are you a fan of ’80s art? Perhaps you’ll love this 1980s-style holiday card as much I do… Created by artist and graphic designer Taylor Hillestad, this artistic greeting showcases the Deco design and clean lines of our favorite decade. When Taylor sent the card my way, I knew I wanted to share it with Mirror80 readers just in time for Christmas! Taylor’s inspiration: ’80s landscape art, Deco style and the use of gradients.
