Who says a little ’80s lobby love isn’t the design fix for your sleek space? New finds in marble, metal and mirror can bring a touch of stately glitz to a living room. Surprisingly modern yet evoking the past, these pieces will bring back that giddy feeling of looking up at the skylights in a vast hotel atrium or seeing your reflection in the walls and floor of a bank lobby. Enjoy!

Mid-Week Match-Up: Jem’s Cartoon Bedroom Becomes an Interior Design Reality
One look at the bedroom of cartoon character Jerrica Benton (a.k.a. Jem), and you get the sense that she singlehandedly forecast the Hollywood Regency revival of today. I mean, come on… an upholstered headboard, a lattice-print rug, and a cabriole-leg chair painted white and recovered in eggplant fabric?! It doesn’t get any better than this. We think Kelly Wearstler and Jonathan Adler would agree. So Mirror80 took on the challenge of recreating Jem’s bedroom using today’s furniture and flourishes. We hope you like the result!
Memphis-Milano Meets Dessert
If you’re a fan of Memphis-Milano design, perhaps you’ve noticed the candy colors, irresistible forms and texture-based patterns that items from this influential movement boast. In fact, the Memphis Group, a Milan-based collective of furniture and product designers formed in 1981, introduced its own brand of shocking color and geometry. Designers like Michele De Lucchi, Thomas Bley, and Ettore Sottsass put their creative stamp on the movement, as shown in the image above.
Friday Video Pick: “1981” by Cut Copy
I’m eagerly awaiting tonight’s Cut Copy show in Austin, Texas! This ’80s-influenced band from Melbourne, Australia has skyrocketed to indie popularity in the seven years since the release of their first album Bright Like Neon Love in 2004. I remember seeing the band at South by Southwest in 2005 with the guy I’d just started dating (now my husband), and I was heavily drawn to the upbeat, layered synthpop that captivated the crowd.
“Planet Earth” by Duran Duran: Friday Video Pick
Greetings from Austin, Texas, where the South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals are well underway. Two nights ago, Duran Duran headlined at Stubb’s. I was happily immersed in the Film Festival while they performed, but my brother Andy was at the show and said the band delivered a good mix of songs. Crowd-pleaser “The Chauffeur” was awesome. Furthermore, the band opened with “A View to a Kill” (how wonderfully unexpected)!
Friday Video Pick: “Let Me Be the One” by Exposé
For this special “Valentine’s Day” edition of Friday Video Picks, Mirror80 was looking for the perfect video. A video whose heroines could conceivably live in a house with “candy-hued heart and rose” decor like this.
The Memphis Group
When you first get a glimpse of ’80s pieces by the Milan-based Memphis Group, you can’t help but have a “Eureka!” moment–countless clothing and dishware patterns took their inspiration from this collective of furniture and product designers, not to mention the graphic design motifs that popped up throughout the 1980s. In fact, many a watered down version of Memphis Group design infiltrated ’80s pop culture. Try watching the opening credits of Saved by the Bell reruns and spot the Memphis motifs…
