New ’80s Decor

August 30, 2017 by Kate Leave a Comment

It’s exciting to be living in a time when it’s easy to get an ’80s look with new items. Today we’ve rounded up our favorites and grouped them by color: teal, pink and black. You know, because they’re quintessential ’80s colors and they’re all having a moment!

Decorating with ’80s Deco Vases

July 31, 2017 by Kate 2 Comments

Happy Summer! For me, the happiest days involve large amounts of tropical greenery and blooms. Since I’m not taking a vacation this year, the magic has to happen through floral arrangements. Let’s just say my ’80s Deco vases have gotten some good use…

A Dreamy ’80s Deco Still Life Shoot

June 19, 2015 by Kate 3 Comments

Today I’m sharing a few snapshots from my latest photo shoot. The subjects of these still life pics are ’80s Deco ceramics! If you caught Mirror80’s latest post on the set design of the 1982 film Tootsie, you saw plenty of sleek ceramics in shades of lavender and pink. The movie inspired me to line up my ’80s vases and swans and photograph them. The flowers you see above are peonies, and once the petals started falling, the shoot took on kind of a dreamy quality, so I went with it. Here are a few more images…enjoy!

Pretty in Pink Party Favors with ’80s Deco Flair

May 12, 2015 by Kate Leave a Comment

This weekend is my Pretty in Pink party photo shoot. Yes, I’m re-imagining the look and feel of the film through a festive tablescape filled with appetizers and drinks. It’s funny because I’m not really a person who surrounds myself with the color pink, but there’s something about the style of this 1986 film that’s feminine and romantic, but also ’80s Deco-meets-punk-meets-Midcentury, with Asian flair. I love a design challenge!

Did you catch our last ’80s Connection interview featuring performer, visual artist, costume designer and art dealer Heather Hermann, aka The Duchess of Deco?! As part of the interview process, Heather sent over a slew of pics documenting the design genius of her Deco-fabulous apartment. You know that feeling you get when you go over to a friend’s house and realize you have the same lamp, throw pillows and penchant for decorating with candles? In this case, we have the same globular vases, ceramic swan collection and penchant for decorating with minerals and quirky terrariums. I instantly knew a home tour was in order! Check out all the details…

Vintage ’80s Deco Finds

September 4, 2013 by Kate Leave a Comment

Happy Wednesday, Everyone! I’ve been in a thrifting mood lately, and the experience has restored my faith in the return of 1980s collectibles! I thought I’d share some of my favorite finds with you, especially those with interesting lines and curves. Some were a few dollars. And then there are those pieces that are worth paying a bit more for, especially if they aren’t that easy to track down. Like the retro Toyo vase above, which I purchased from Etsy shop Vintage Lanie.

Shopping for Vintage ’80s Deco Finds…

August 19, 2013 by Kate Leave a Comment

Happy Monday, Everyone! Lately I’ve been in a thrifting kind of mood…and there’s nothing I’d rather shop for than ’80s Deco finds. If you read Friday’s post, you know that I’m on the lookout for some ’80s Deco decor for my powder room. This weekend I found another amazing vase (stay tuned for a future post sharing all my finds for that space). But I’ve also been on the hunt for some ’80s fashion finds! It all started when I found the gorgeous blouse above from Etsy shop Tigerlily Vintage. It has a tropical vibe that mixes well with exotic ’80s Deco pieces, and a rich color palette makes it perfect for transitioning into fall. Here are some other fabulous items currently available on Etsy…

Goodwill Find: An ’80s Deco Vase

June 18, 2012 by Kate 4 Comments

An '80s Deco Vase

Those who know me well are aware of my addiction to ’80s Deco vases. It’s an obsession that started a few years ago when I saw a red plastic floral vase at an antique mall, and it reminded me of the plethora of curvy ’80s ceramics that graced many a table and shelf top during my favorite decade. When I couldn’t find the vases at any thrift shops in the area, I headed to Goodwill, also known as the mother ship. At any given point in time, there will be at least one ’80s Deco vase and several ’80s Deco lamps on the shelves of the local Goodwill, often in shades of peach, blue, mauve and white. My latest purchase–a blue glass piece–can be seen above!

When You Get Caught Between the Moon and ’80s Deco: A Scene from “Arthur”

May 30, 2012 by Kate 1 Comment

Dudley Moore in the 1981 film "Arthur"

I know it’s crazy, but it’s true! Please excuse my reference to the theme song from the 1981 film Arthur, which features the best 1980s Deco-style bathroom I’ve ever laid eyes on. If you were a millionaire, wouldn’t you want to bathe in that tub? I wonder if Dudley Moore enjoyed being surrounded by pedestals of calla lilies…

Mid-Week Match-Up: An ’80s Deco Poster Inspires Dining Room Decor

November 16, 2011 by Kate Leave a Comment

'80s Deco decor

We continue our celebration of 1980s graphic design by focusing on an ’80s Deco poster we featured in Monday’s Pic Fix. In fact, the poster inspired us to design a 1980s Deco-style dining room with a modern edge, thanks to today’s Hollywood Regency revival. Think Jonathan Adler meets Art Deco! Proving that ’80s decor can blend seamlessly with modern sensibilities, our “’80s meets modern” dining room is a celebration of ’80s Deco in the context of today’s style.
