Today’s DIY project celebrates the kitschy yet modern glory of ’80s landscape art. In fact 1980s Southwestern art has experienced a recent comeback, with savvy collectors combining formerly-dated pieces with newer art selections for an updated look. Our art project shows you how to get the landscape look using art paper, glue and a little imagination.
’80s DIY: Neon Embellishments
It’s Day 2 of ’80s DIY Week here at Mirror80, and we have another project for you to enjoy! This one involves re-purposing the flagging tape used by surveyors. Why we love it: it’s a neon blitz! Plus, with its accessibility and affordability ($1.99 at Home Depot, folks), this ribbon-like “tape” is an easy way to add an ’80s dash of color to the items around your home. Today’s target: vases!
’80s DIY Week Begins!
This week Mirror80 spotlights DIY projects with a 1980s twist. When it comes to interior design from the decade of decadence, a little can go a long way. Our projects will show you how to tastefully add a touch of ’80s to your space. But we won’t stop there! We’ll also show you how to dive head first into 1980s style while keeping it relevant by adding cheeky updates. Take today’s DIY adventure, a monochromatic ’80s-style floral arrangement…
Christmas at Mirror80
The week of Christmas is upon us! For your seasonal enjoyment, we’ve compiled our favorite winter posts. From George Michael’s ski bunny style to a DIY project based on 1980s stickers, you’re sure to find something you love as you peruse the features below. Have a very ’80s Holiday!
A Lisa Frank-Inspired ’80s Christmas Tree!
Yesterday we focused on the sleek white and metallic Christmas decorations of the modern homeowner in the 1980s. Keeping the palette monochromatic provided a stark yet sparkly take on Holiday decor that was perfect for clean-lined dwelling spaces. Today we throw subtlety out the window with a child-friendly Christmas tree inspired by designer Lisa Frank, whose creations decorated many a school supply and sticker in the 1980s.
An ’80s Halloween Party
On the eve of Fall’s official beginning, I invited family to join me for a Halloween-themed dinner party. I wanted to give the event an ’80s twist. My brother and I were kids in the ’80s and remember many a Halloween season spent watching cartoons, buying neon props for our costumes, and reveling in the wonder of the decade’s best junk food.
’80s Party Ideas
Today is Mirror80’s first birthday! Thanks for making our first year in the blogosphere a totally awesome one! We celebrated last week with an ’80s-themed party, and we’re sharing our ’80s-tastic ideas with you for today’s post. Here are three party themes that will suit the ’80s mood you’d like to evoke:
A 1980s Office Makeover
After reading the title of this post, you might think we’ve taken an office packed with ’80s decor and given it a more modern look. Not entirely so. The point of this interior design DIY was to take an office–in this case, the home of Mirror80–and give it a streamlined nod to the ’80s.
1980s Interior Design: A Floral Challenge
This week, I enjoyed the design challenge of creating a dramatic floral arrangement to be used in a portrait that will be my official blog photo! My love of ’80s design has resulted in a large collection of ceramics–’80s Deco vases (as shown above), spherical pieces, swans in a variety of hues. This spring I decided to document my collection, and to be included in the picture.
DIY Project: The ’80s Vanity
A little vanity never hurts… Watch a teen flick from the 1980s, and you just might catch a glimpse of a dressing table–or vanity–in the background, packed with knickknacks and collectibles. Mirror80 made a go of it using finds from Goodwill, Savers and a local antique mall. Total cost: roughly $25.
