I recently had the pleasure of watching Sing Street, a movie that follows the creative pursuits of struggling teenager Conor as he starts a band to impress a girl. Anyone been there?! While I’m not one to regularly watch musicals, I love, love, love movies about resourceful kids who do amazing things despite their difficult circumstances. Combine that element with an ’80s setting, and things really start to get good. By the first musical performance, I was all in! Sing Street is now on Blu-ray™, DVD, Digital HD & On Demand. This feel-good, coming of age story written and directed by John Carney (Once, Begin Again) features the ultimate soundtrack of the ’80s. In fact, Carney was the bassist of Irish band The Frames in the early ’90s. Who better to oversee a movie about a group of lads starting a band in Dublin?!
The film has an amazing look, from the interiors (authentic and real, like the home in the video for “Our House” by Madness) to the fabulous fashion. And let’s not forget the makeup! At the top of the post, we see a photo of Lucy Boynton, who plays Raphina in the film. As you watch Sing Street, you get to hear plenty of original music from the ’80s, including tracks from Duran Duran, The Cure and Hall & Oates. In fact, one of my favorite scenes involves lead character Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) and his family watching and commenting on Duran Duran’s 1982 video for “Rio”. Duran Duran’s “A View To A Kill” is my favorite song by a great band. Brutally precise production, gentle and powerful at the same time, it broke the mold (and the mould lol) of Bond songs and was sleek, sharp and exciting. The lyrics “The first crystal tears fall as snowflakes on your body. First time in years, to drench your skin with lover’s rosy stain” just exemplify the often under-appreciated quality of the band’s material.
My favorite Cure song is “Just Like Heaven”. The Cure is a great band with many amazing songs to choose from but this is my favorite because of it’s dreamy, romantic qualities. This song has been redone by so many artists who have all done nice jobs, but none have captured that original magical quality that The Cure put into it.
My favorite song by Hall & Oates is surprisingly one led by John Oates. It’s called “Possession Obsession.” More of a deep cut from H&O’s 1984 “Big Bam Boom” album. It’s a desirable smooth & dreamy “night drive” song. People sometimes forget John Oates has a fantastic voice himself! Perfect to play when driving into the city. The music video has John Oates as a cab driver in NYC, and shows glimpses of a night out in town along with the yuppy culture of the 1980s. All around, just a nostalgic song always so dear to me. I’m always in the mood for it. <3
Duran Duran’s “American Science” has got to be my favorite tune of theirs. Such a great, funky jam that makes you want to dance!
How ever do I choose just one? Duran Duran’s “New Religion” and “Save a Prayer” rank as my earlier faves! Just the right blend of mid-tempo, synth, lyric, and atmosphere!

I love Hall and Oates “I can’t go for that (No can do),” it has such a funky bassy beginning with a twinkly background sound. It will always remind me of a hot lazy summer afternoon.
Hmmm, well my favorite Duran Duran song is The Reflex, my favorite Cure song is probably A Night Like This, and my favorite Hall & Oates song is probably Out Of Touch.

My favorite song by the Cure has to be Let’s go to Bed! It’s unlike anything else, in my opinion. I was lucky enough to see them live this summer – was a totally amazing experience!

“Hungry Like the Wolf” has always been a favorite. I was born in ’84 so I don’t honestly remember these groups in 80s, but there were always a few Duran Duran songs on rotation on various local radio stations in the 90s, and “Hungry” always the one that stuck with me.
