Of all the ’80s interior design styles to make a comeback, Memphis-Milano has been the most popular. By far! In fact, a new take on this cutting-edge design movement has evolved–a style we at Mirror80 like to call the New Memphis. Today’s post celebrates the fact that New Memphis design has found its way to the world of ceramics, thanks to Recreation Center. Ready to see more?…

Let’s start by getting acquainted with Recreation Center. This Brooklyn-based brand puts its focus on functional ceramics. That’s right–they’re works of art that you can use every day. Not a bad combination! At the helm of Recreation Center is Josephine Heilpern, who works with materials that have inspired her print and sculpture background, all the while staying committed to the creation of practical design and simple forms. In fact, each item is created by hand.

Available with black detailing or natural clay tones, these items take the sprinkle motif to new heights. Above are the Raw Mark Pitcher and the Raw Mark Tumbler. The handle of the pitcher is dipped in bright yellow liquid rubber.

Next we have the Dot Mug and Dot Bowl, which are made with speckled clay, glazed in white, then hand painted with dots. As with the Raw Mark Pitcher, the handles of the mugs are dipped in bright yellow rubber. Ready for some fun with grids?…

Recreation Center’s Grid Planter
Above we see the Grid Planter, displayed with still life flair. Below are the Grid Mug and Grid Bowl. How does this grid motif get its signature look? With the help of speckled clay and white glaze. The grid and the rim are left unglazed, providing a raw contrast.

We end with the Grid Pitcher, which features a handle dipped in yellow rubber, as well as an ability to hold up to two quarts of liquid. What’s so refreshing about these pieces? The way handmade style meets the vivid color and striking geometry of Memphis design. It’s earthy yet modern. Bold yet subtle.
