New Retro Weekender: Cooking Up Some ’80s-Style Design!

May 3, 2013 by Kate Leave a Comment

Cooking up some good design

Happy Friday, Everyone! What are you up to this weekend? On my agenda is a list of tasks that relate to my upcoming move. For one thing, we’re finally getting a little more space. Which means we may have room for more than a couch in the living room! I’m on the hunt for a couple of comfy chairs. Not to mention, there’s wiring for a pendant light to hang over the dining room table–looks like it’s time to head to IKEA! Check out my weekend to-dos below, as well as a few tips on current sources for ’80s style!

MY WEEKEND AGENDA:

Find a pendant light. A selection with a touch of ’80s pizzazz would be nice. Right now I’m drawn to the curved form of the MINUT pendant downlight and the radiant yellow tone of the IKEA PS 2012 pendant light, both shown at the top left of the montage above.

Browse affordable armchairs. Did I mention we were on a budget?! All I can say is thank goodness for IKEA! What do you think of PELLO Chair (shown above, top right) or the KIVIK One-Seat Section (shown below, bottom left)?

Watch The Americans. How have I missed this show? A friend brought it to my attention the other day–this FX network series is set in 1981, and the plot revolves around two Soviet KGB officers posing as an American married couple in order to spy on the US. I was told to check out the interiors! Above we see actors Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys in the set’s 1980s kitchen. [Image from CNN.com]

Explore the ’80s kitchen… Speaking of kitchens, the kitchen of my new home has a bit of ’80s style built in. And I’m trying to decide how to decorate it. Be on the lookout for a blog post on the 1980s kitchen next week. In the meantime, I came across this fun PacMan Cutting Board, complete with pixelated style (shown at the bottom right of the montage above).

Check out Duro Olowu’s amazing collection for JCPenney! A big thank-you to my friends Cory and Jonathan for bringing this designer’s festive line to my attention. Olowu’s home accessories in particular have an African look with undertones of Memphis-Milano style. Above we see a bold black, yellow and white serving platter. Now why didn’t I get this for my Memphis-Milano Retro Foodie photo shoot?

Happy Friday! Hope your weekend is fabulous!
