Happy Monday, Everyone! This past weekend I did a little shopping… and it seems that everywhere I went, there were flashes of ’80s summer style. If it’s still cold where you live, or if it’s beginning to warm up and you’re dreaming of the balmy days ahead, check out today’s finds. They have hints of ’80s design (some more blatant than others), and they would definitely add a splash of color to your wardrobe or interior!
Happy Friday, Everyone! For this edition of New Retro Weekender, I apologize in advance for the Huey Lewis and the News puns that may follow… But first I’ll start by saying that my brother and his friends LOVE non-mainstream music. And they know a lot about obscure music. Which is why I was a bit surprised when he told me they had spent the better part of an evening singing along to a Huey Lewis and the News album. “Was it Sports?” I asked. “Of course,” he answered.
Happy Monday, Everyone! If you’re like me and not quite ready for the beginning of a new work week, check out these palmy images and let them take you away to another place… an ’80s-style balmy one! As we’ve mentioned, the ’80s revival has recently received a huge boost with the help of Tumblr. From time to time, we at Mirror80 enjoy rounding up our favorite Tumblr pics, and today we explore an undeniable Tumblr trend: palm trees! Check out the images that follow, as well as the links for some great ’80s-style Tumblr fun…
Why is it that I’m always inspired to write ’80s-style fashion posts after shopping with my husband? We were at Nordstrom this weekend, and I wandered upstairs to the Topshop section. I was met with an array of geometric jewelry finds, many of which integrated spikes and studs in the most innovative of ways! Today we go straight to the Topshop source and check out jewelry that many an ’80s yuppie wishes she’d sported back in the day. But these finds have an edge that bring them into the present (and possibly the future)! Enjoy…
Happy Wednesday, Everyone! Here in beautiful Austin, TX, the South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals are well underway. I’m a sucker for the SXSW Film Festival, not only because this is always Austin’s most beautiful weather week of the year, but because seeing amazing film after film is absolutely addictive. You may remember that last year I saw and reviewed a great documentary called Beauty Is Embarrassing, featuring artist Wayne White (who designed sets and puppets for the hit ’80s children’s show Pee-wee’s Playhouse). This year the festival has put me in the mood to take a look back at some fun Mirror80 posts featuring some key 1980s films!
Summer is still months away, but that didn’t stop the tropics from putting their stamp on spring fashion for 2013. And it’s not just the tropics…it’s the ’80s tropics! Forget the muted tones of cruise wear. This fashion is hot, hot hot. Vivid pinks, blues and greens are set against a backdrop of black, and the patterns are edgy enough to propel these pieces out of the lagoon and onto the streets of Miami. Oh, and we have Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters to thank for the pieces you see above!
One of my favorite things about the current ’80s revival is the way today’s designers have reinvented the best of the past. From ’80s-style clothing that actually fits to over-the-top patterns that are cheekier and more intentional in their craziness, there’s something refreshing about giving good style a second chance. Which is why the current rhinestone resurgence could not be edgier or more fabulous! In fact, today’s slew of rhinestone finds are bolder, more angular and more daring than the originals. They revel in their own shine, combining color and form in ways that vintage pieces didn’t ever attempt. We think you’ll love today’s featured finds. The best news: they are absolutely affordable!!!
Happy Valentine’s Day all you ’80s-lovers!!! For today’s featured images, I went back in time to the Valentine’s Days past of Mirror80. Whether you’re putting together a bouquet for your sweetie, purchasing a special gift for yourself, or starting a vintage silver jewelry collection, these pics are a rosy reminder of all things pretty in pink.
While shopping this weekend, I came across an assortment of ’80s-style shirts for men. As it turns out, Topman has been heavily influenced by 1980s colors, patterns and cuts in the creation of their new collection. Today we celebrate the fun of flamboyant design, as well as the joy of the slightly over-sized fit. As Topman claims, “Our new 80′s inspired fit with wider, dropped shoulders and fuller sleeves is designed to create an oversized streetwear silhouette.” And with sizes ranging from XXS-XXL, there’s definitely a perfect fit for everyone!
