Every year around Halloween, I buy a colorful wig for some costume-y fun and prepare to revel in vivid hues. And every year as I pack away the wig, I tell myself I’m going to find ways to celebrate color on a daily basis well past Halloween. That can be challenging, especially as fall and winter hues become more subdued, mirroring the cold, grey weather outside…
A Sci-fi Still Life
Today’s post is a little reminder to make time for creative projects in your life. When I shot these photos, I was under the influence…of the Stranger Things soundtrack! The music is nothing short of amazing. So sci-fi, in a synth-heavy, ’80s way. Listening to it made me want to do an other-wordly photo shoot…
A Summer Photo Shoot
Happy Summer! I raided the Mirror80 prop closet this week to create a few colorful still life vignettes. The goal: to try and capture the festivity of summer with retro-modern flair. Neon coil bracelets, confetti, tinsel, drink umbrellas…nothing was off limits. Take a look at how it all came together!
Decorating with Geo Objects
One of the easiest ways to channel 1980s style (with modern flair) is to decorate with geo objects. Incorporate geometric shapes and forms, and jazz it all up with reflective surfaces and tropical leaves. Here are some fun vignettes that celebrate the geo look…
A Palm Party with Happy Mundane
Today I’m sharing a collection of snapshots from the Palm Party I threw with my friend Jon of Happy Mundane! He came to visit last month, and we had a blast running around Austin, shopping for party supplies, and enjoying a creative collaboration. Read on for an affordable party idea that’s perfect for summer..
Sand Art, Rocks and Minerals
One of the most affordable ways to add retro style to your home in through sand art, rocks and minerals. While buying them from specialty shops isn’t always cheap, there are online sellers who offer affordable specimens, and I’ve found that estate sales are a great place to hunt them down!
Favorite Photos
I wanted to take some time today and check in with all of you. Since the start of the new year, I’ve been making an effort to include more original photo shoots here at Mirror80. I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below. It goes without saying that every week I’ll continue to post lots of original design photos from the ’80s (many of them from my favorite 1980s design books). But I want to know what you’ve enjoyed in terms of original shoots. What are your favorites?
Holographic Style
There’s definitely something holographic going on… If you read design blogs, you may have noticed the appearance of items such as holographic pillows, party decorations and manicures. This holographic trend inspired today’s photo shoot!
Spring Things
Happy Spring! It may not be official yet, but once the sun returns and Daylight Savings has passed, it’s spring as far as I’m concerned. So I’m celebrating with a colorful photo shoot that features some of my favorite spring things, all set against a backdrop of silly string. Because this time of the year is all about vibrancy and fun!
A Totem Photo Shoot: Memphis Stackables
Happy Monday–today should be a colorful one! A new week brings new possibilities, so I’m sharing Mirror80’s latest photo shoot. It’s a blend of Memphis-Milano style and sculptural totem forms, and I’m calling it Stackables. For awhile now, I’ve been creating tabletop totems at home. My favorite items to use in stackables: vases, bowls, and dollar store items (such as ping pong balls, rubber band balls and other sporty items).
