Happy Friday, Everyone! As the weekend approaches, we wanted to share a few Mirror80 Pinterest updates. Three new boards have been added with the goal of giving you an easy way to keep track of our ever-evolving posts and projects! For starters, check out our marble mania board, which includes the latest in our obsession with marble of all colors and forms, from tile and DIY endeavors to the work of our favorite artists.
DIY Marble Art
Let’s end the week with another DIY project! Remember all of that marble-style ikat fabric that dominated pillows, bedding and window draperies in the 1980s? Today’s DIY endeavor channels that very look while simultaneously celebrating the current marble craze. In fact, this project is so easy, you can go from start to finish in 15 minutes. Nail polish is the ingredient of choice! Check out all the details in my latest post for Decoist, and enjoy a sneak peek below…
One of a Kind Stones by Curtis Bort
A couple weeks ago, I shared some of my favorite ’80s-meets-modern Etsy finds, including a feldspar pendant from One Of A Kind Stones, the shop of Curtis Bort. In addition to the pendant, I ordered a variety of stone decorations and display pieces, and today I’m showing them off in a new photo shoot! I want to put these geometric wonders in every room of the house. And use them in my terrariums. And arrange them in my display case. I just might have to order a few more…
The Beauty of Raw Materials
Hi Everyone! Last week I featured a DIY mineral scape that involved a range of materials, from marble tiles to brass hardware. Have you been noticing the current design trend of metal, stone, glass and wood? A true celebration of raw materials! One day the geo forms and marble mania will subside, but now that marble and brass are officially “back”, they can always be part of an ’80s lover’s design collection. And thanks to sites like Etsy, you can order these materials in bulk at reasonable prices. Bring on the DIY projects…or simply display them as is for a retro-meets-modern look!
DIY Project: Marble and Mineral Scapes
Hi Everyone! Today I’m sharing my latest DIY project idea: marble and mineral scapes. Think of them as terrariums without plants. The ingredients of choice are colorful sand, mineral specimens, marble tiles, and hardware such as washers and hex nuts. I’ve made no secret of my love for marble, as well as my excitement about the current design trend of celebrating geometric forms with materials such as glass, stone and metal. Today’s featured DIY project reflects recent trends while throwing in a bit of retro flair…
Glass, Metal and Marble Decor from Matter
Happy Wednesday, Everyone! The week is half over, and I’m already planning some new art projects for the rapidly approaching weekend. I’ll admit that today’s featured finds are a bit out of my budget at this point in time, but they completely inspire me in my creative projects. Do you ever look to high-end design items for retro-meets-modern inspiration? I couldn’t be more excited to share these stunning pieces from Matter, a New York-based shop that also offers their furniture, lighting and decor online.
Retro-Meets-Modern Design
Geo style, pastels, marble…all of these current trends have close ties to the 1980s. And this week, a variety of sites and blogs featured them in spades. First up: The New York Times. On Wednesday, I came across this article, titled “Furnishings With Geometric Patterns.” The article’s featured designer is Rafael de Cárdenas from Architecture at Large. I’m a long-time admirer!
