Happy Friday! I spent yesterday in San Antonio, Texas, and I couldn’t stop myself from snapping pics of mall and restaurant landscaping—of the tropical variety. And then I couldn’t stop myself from over-processing the photos. Kinda ridiculous, but too much fun! Thought these images might help you sail into the weekend. Enjoy…

’80s Summer Party Ideas
Happy Summer, Everyone! With the warm weather comes many thoughts of entertaining over the next few months… So I’m gathering ideas for summer parties and future Retro Foodie posts. To prepare, I’ve created a new Pinterest board called ’80s Summer Party Ideas. First on the list: a Neon Noir night! Think Miami Vice meets cool, tropical cuisine. And we’re combining this event with the iris and lily-themed fete we were already planning, because let’s face it–in many a Neon Noir thriller, someone lives in a swanky residence where an ’80s Deco vase holds a bundle of calla lilies or similar blooms. There’s a glamorous side to all of this, and we intend to milk it for all it’s worth!
’80s Scenes from Moon Deluxe
A couple of years ago, I featured a blog post on Frederick Barthelme’s Moon Deluxe, a collection of short stories written in 1983. Palm tree-filled apartment complexes, neon lighting and strip shopping centers are the backdrop to stories about simple interactions between people trying to find their way in life. The narrators of these tales are men, and they don’t always know what to do with the beautiful, forward women who cross their paths. Many of these stories were originally published in The New Yorker, and it’s amazing to see such vivid descriptions of suburban sprawl in all of its shiny ’80s glory.
’80s-Style Summer Finds
Happy Summer, Everyone! OK, it may not be official yet… But when retailers are already putting their summer collections on sale, it’s time to take a minute and spotlight the stuff. Especially when the “stuff” features a trendy update of ’80s style. That’s what’s in store this summer–flamingos, palm trees, and ultra-bright florals that can’t help but conjure the makeup bags of yore. So today we pause for a moment to revel in the glory of 1980s summer style. And the fun way it’s revisited this season!
