On this second to last day of July, we’re looking back at our favorite posts from the past month. Kate here, and I’m happy to report that it’s been a month of creative inspiration, DIY projects and little trips to beachy locations. Not to mention, we celebrated our favorite television series of the summer with a viewing party concept that involves plenty of ’80s tech style. Join us as we reminisce…
An ’80s-Style DIY Still Life
This weekend I filled my $50 IKEA display case with still life vignettes! It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of creating for quite some time. There is a TON of still life inspiration to draw from, as ’80s-influenced still life photography has experienced a huge revival in recent years, thanks to photographers such as Richie Talboy and design studios like Ladies & Gentlemen. And don’t get me started on the slew of still life images on Pinterest! Read on for all the project details…
’80s Tumblr Inspiration: Simple and Sleek
Hi Everyone! Today we begin a new series that celebrates the myriad of ’80s design images featured on our favorite Tumblrs. So many photos, so little time! It’s our goal to curate an amazing collection of interior design pics that can teach us about getting the ’80s look at home. Today’s theme: simple and sleek.
A South Padre Saturday
This weekend I enjoyed a sunny Saturday with family in South Padre, a barrier island along the Texas Gulf Coast. Whenever I visit a beach town, I have my camera ready to snap photos of sea and surf, tropical accents, and of course, souvenirs of the neon variety. And speaking of souvenirs, we found ourselves at Bobz World in Los Fresnos (on the way to South Padre). It’s impossible to describe this retail outlet, which also features a jungle-style garden, an arcade, and black light mini golf and mini bowl opportunities. So I’ll paint a picture with photos. Rad-tastic photos!!!
’80s Music Video Land: “A Forest” by The Cure
Welcome to our 5th installment of ’80s Music Video Land, a series that explores the look and feel of our favorite videos from The Decade of Decadence. Today’s featured video: “A Forest” by The Cure. There’s something about early Cure videos that takes us to another place. If you haven’t yet checked out selections like “Let’s Go to Bed” and “The Walk,” do yourself a favor and give them a look.
Re-Making the ’80s: Halt and Catch Fire
If you’ve been reading Mirror80 over the past couple of weeks, you’ve probably figured out that I’m a bit smitten with AMC’s new ’80s tech series Halt and Catch Fire. Kate here, and today I’m sharing more design inspiration from the show. Last week we revealed our top reasons to watch, and this week I’m zoning in on the way series creators have meticulously re-made the 1980s, from the interiors to the fashion!
At Home with Heather Hermann: An ’80s Deco Tour
Did you catch our last ’80s Connection interview featuring performer, visual artist, costume designer and art dealer Heather Hermann, aka The Duchess of Deco?! As part of the interview process, Heather sent over a slew of pics documenting the design genius of her Deco-fabulous apartment. You know that feeling you get when you go over to a friend’s house and realize you have the same lamp, throw pillows and penchant for decorating with candles? In this case, we have the same globular vases, ceramic swan collection and penchant for decorating with minerals and quirky terrariums. I instantly knew a home tour was in order! Check out all the details…
The ’80s on Television: Halt and Catch Fire
Anyone else already hooked on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire? This new series follows a trio of tech-savvy pioneers who reverse engineer an IBM computer in the hopes of joining the PC revolution and transforming 1980s tech culture in the process. Yes, this show occupies the time slot that Mad Men left behind. Is it possible that AMC got wind of our dream ’80s television series, Rad Men? OK, not so likely. But that doesn’t mean we don’t already love their newest foray into the realm of pop culture history. There are many reasons to watch Halt and Catch Fire. Here are our top four:
Mirror80 May Favorites
May at Mirror80 has been all about celebrating geometry, creative possibilities, and materials such as marble, metal and glass. In fact, this month we’ve spent quite a bit of time highlighting the intersection of modern geo style and 1980s minimalism. Today we take a look back at some of our favorite moments, complete with pictures and links so you can quickly access each original post. Now that May has come and gone, we are officially in summer mode. June’s going to be good…
’80s Tumblr Style
One of our favorite sources for ’80s inspiration is Tumblr. In fact, at this point in time, Tumblr is the single best source for 1980s art and design images online! Today we take a look a variety of our favorite photos, showcased by a variety of our favorite Tumblrs! Above we see a fetching mineral sample from Commonchant.
