Lately I’ve been working on a collection of creative projects for my house, mostly of the wall art variety. I’ve gathered a slew of images, and it’s been wonderful to discover a WIDE RANGE of sources for 1980s design inspiration. Whether you’re creating a collage for your living room, assembling a modern “sculpture” out of everyday items, or taking on a larger project (such as building furniture), any image that celebrates color and form has the power to spark your next big endeavor!

The Modern Sculpture of Esther Ruiz
The sculpture of Esther Ruiz has an other-worldly feel, yet also a vibe that can’t help but evoke a sense of ’80s style. Think New Memphis meets Neon Noir, with a unique twist! Combining materials such as hydraulic cement, Plexiglas, neon and minerals, Ruiz creates compositions that are both clean-lined and chunky. Bold colors come to life on their cement platforms, and unexpected pairings of reflective surfaces and interesting forms are truly captivating. Here are a few of our favorites…
3D Illustrations by Anny Wang
I recently came across the 3-D illustrations of Anny Wang, a visual artist, spatial designer and furniture designer currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her work is undeniably modern, and there is a fantastical element to her pieces, such as Golden, shown above. Some have a Vaporwave vibe, and some incorporate my very favorite elements: mirrors, marble and minerals. Her images are gaining popularity on Tumblr as well, and it’s easy to see why. Ready for more?…

There’s a still life revival going on as we speak, and over the next few months, we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite still life photography! The result: a variety of unique creations, many of which can’t help but ooze retro style. In a totally modern way, of course!

’80s Art Picks: Sophisticated Style
A suit and tie. Red lipstick. A city skyline. Sophisticated imagery was everywhere in the ’80s, not only because it reflected key elements of the era’s yuppie culture, but because it evolved along with 1980s Deco style. In fact, when shopping for ’80s art, you just might find that you’re able to mix and match works of varying styles when they all share a chic feel. ’80s Deco prints, cosmetic ads and certain Neon Noir posters can all coexist in harmony. In our second edition of ’80s Art Picks, we focus on the finer things in life. Enjoy!
