This fall at Mirror80, we’re all about shopping in person for dazzling ’80s finds. After all, with the weather turning crisp and cool, the thought of traipsing through fields of tents at antique festivals or a series of driveways for a morning of garage sales is somehow enticing rather than exhausting… So we’re creating a collection of resource articles to help you locate the finest in ’80s design. Last week we focused on finding ’80s treasures at antique shows. Today we shine the spotlight on estate sales. Read on for helpful tips and hints…
Retro Foodie: A Fall Snack Break
Happy Fall! It’s Saturday–time to slow down… What better way to take a break from the weekday grind than with a fall snack break?! Retro-style, of course! I bought some vintage ’80s mugs and filled them with hot chocolate. Then I baked a spice cake. Whether you’re into baking or you like to purchase your sweets, take a break from it all this October and remind yourself that it’s fall. And that sometimes it’s OK to stop and savor life’s treats…
How to Shop Retro in a Vintage-Loving World
Yesterday I enjoyed a trip to Warrenton, TX, where I shopped for retro finds at a mega-big festival known as Texas Antique Week. It takes place in multiple small towns that are roughly an hour and a half east of Austin. Dealers from all over the country flock to the area each October and April, and the event draws thousands of shoppers, who browse row after row of tents. My mission: to come home with a bag full of retro finds. Read on for more about my adventures…
Classixx!
It’s a new week, and there are many fun things in store… Tomorrow is our next Retro Foodie photo shoot featuring some ’80s-style fall treats. Wednesday I head to Round Top and Warrenton, TX for one of the largest antique and collectibles events in the country. Yes, I’m hoping to score some amazing retro finds! And I also have a few design projects planned this week, which is why I ordered the two vinyl items you see above–for listening AND for framing.
’80s Halloween Style on Pinterest…
With Halloween about a month away, we’ve started collecting our favorite ’80s-style images for the upcoming holiday. And what’s not to love about Halloween? There’s no emotional baggage, plenty of junk food, and a chance to pretend you’re someone that you’re not. Three reasons to celebrate! Check out the new Mirror80 Pinterest board, which we’ve titled “A Very ’80s Halloween”…
’80s Teen Vanity Style
Last week we glammed it up with an ’80s vanity design that incorporated elements of Deco style and upscale flair. Ready for another take on vanity/dressing table style from our favorite decade? This week we take our cue from the 1985 film Just One of the Guys, starring Joyce Hyser as a teen writer who poses as a boy and enrolls at a rival high school in order to enter a city-wide journalism contest. She’s a pretty convincing guy, but at heart, she’s all-girl, as shown by the image that follows. Read on for more details and pics…
So Sottsass!
I have artist Dominic Joyce to thank for this post! Last week he brought today’s featured installation to my attention… London decor retailer Darkroom is currently honoring the work of Memphis-Milano designer Ettore Sottsass with an in-store tribute featuring a limited edition collection. The participants include the likes of Studiopepe, Jamie Julien-Brown, Stone Theatre and more. Titled “So Sottsass,” the installation includes upscale items such as marble trays, totem lights and hand painted ceramics, along with more affordable offerings such as wrapping paper. Check out the delicious finds below…
’80s Glam Vanity Style
During Mirror80’s first year, we featured a post on ’80s vanity style. You know–the surface of a dresser or counter, often filled with those pretty little items we use for grooming, with some extra baubles thrown in. Today we update that piece by taking another look at the ’80s vanity. And we start by going glam! Stay tuned for a second vanity piece next week, when we’ll get a little more playful and colorful with our ’80s style…
Style Icon: Terri Nunn
Today we launch a new series called Style Icon, and in our minds, the first to be featured absolutely had to be Terri Nunn. It’s hard to know what this lovely lead singer of Berlin was best known for: her hair or her fashion sense. But why choose? She could rock a period costume, as in the ’30s-inspired video for “No More Words.” People still emulate her famous black-tipped hairdo. Knit dresses, sequined formals, hats…she pulled it all off with effortless style. In fact, if you’re shopping for retro ’80s pieces and you’re not sure how to pull off a frock with shoulder pads, watch a Berlin video and take notes…
A Fall Retro Foodie Mood Board
Happy Friday, Everyone! It’s still 100 degrees here in Texas, so when I went to the grocery store and saw the bins of pumpkins out front, it was a bit hard to get into the spirit of the new season. And let’s face it… Summer won’t officially be over for another couple of weeks. With that said, I’m already planning Mirror80’s next Retro Foodie photo shoot–an “Ease Into Fall” snack break. Hot coffee with whipped cream and spice cake inspired by one of the most popular packaged desserts of the ’80s will be the goodies of choice…
