Today we’re immersing ourselves in the ’80s iris and lily phenomenon! Ceramics, flowers, clothing and jewelry–this floral Deco look put its stamp on many a product in the decade of decadence. And the look is inspiring our latest Retro Foodie event, which is shaping up to be a glamorous take on 1980s floral style. I’ve put together a mood board to cement the theme, and I can’t help but start with the Mikasa plate at the top left of the montage, which is a gift from my friend Kat. Thanks to Kat for getting the ball rolling! Enjoy today’s montage, and stay tuned for our next Retro Foodie post in June, complete with recipes and decor…
Retro Foodie: A Memphis-Milano Menu
Today we celebrate the radiant color-fest at the heart of Memphis-Milano design, a movement that began with the formation of the Italy-based Memphis Group in 1981. The goal: to challenge the conventions of “tasteful” design. The result: bold colors and playful geometry. Memphis-Milano pieces are highly collectible, and a whole new generation of fans has formed with the passage of time. Also of interest is the large number of food-oriented pictures that juxtapose Memphis-Milano images on ’80s-style Tumblrs. We’re talking ice cream with sprinkles, squiggles of mustard on juicy hamburgers and much more. Today we channel the wonders of Memphis-style junk food in our latest edition of Retro Foodie!
Memphis-Milano Monday!
Hi Everyone! This weekend I completed Part I of the latest Retro Foodie photo shoot. And yes, it’s Memphis-Milano inspired. You can see a sneak preview with the plate of donuts above. What’s better than donuts covered with chocolate icing? Donuts covered with chocolate icing and sprinkles! In fact, the sprinkle motif is the inspiration for today’s montage. We’re sure you’ll enjoy all of the tasty, colorful goodness. Stay tuned for the rest of the photo shoot images on Wednesday. In the meantime, enjoy today’s pics, which prove that whether you’re talking about furniture, art or food, great design in delicious!
A Memphis-Milano Mood Board
Have you been following our Retro Foodie series? Each month we create a foodscape based on an eye-catching aspect of New Retro design. Earlier this month, we featured an ’80s yuppie-style cocktail party that included swanky drinks and decadent appetizers. We’re already planning next month’s affair, a junk food fest that celebrates Memphis-Milano style! Today’s mood board channels the look we’re going for, which involves plenty of colorful drinks, various ice cream treats with sprinkles, and of course, my High Spirits dinnerware from Mikasa…
Retro Foodie: A Yuppie Cocktail Party Menu
This ’80s yuppie cocktail party has been in the works for quite some time, and we’re thrilled to bring you the pics from this week’s photo shoot! The key to throwing an ’80s cocktail party: good drinks and over-the-top food. In the 1980s, it was all about food presentation. Food was stacked, garnished and arranged as art. The portions were often too small and the finishes overdone, but hey–it was pretty! And nobody needed to escape into the world of gourmet food like the ’80s yuppie (young upwardly-mobile professional). They worked more than they played, so when they played, they had to play hard!
An ’80s-Style Glitterfest
Anyone else watch the Oscars last night? I enjoyed the show with my hubby, and we kept it simple with a healthy meal sandwiched between a decadent goat cheese appetizer and some sugary desserts. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m still gathering flashy inspiration for the next Retro Foodie photo shoot for Mirror80. This we know: a yuppie cocktail party is the plan. I’m just trying to decide how much glitter to add to the event. Do I keep it simple with sleek details or glam it up? Today’s mood board goes off the glittery deep end. And there’s no shame in that…
Yuppie Cocktail Hour
This week at Mirror80, we’re shining a spotlight on the finer things in life. Swanky lobbies with black marble tile, gourmet food with fancy flourishes, and designer cocktails with a kick! Yes, we’re peeking into the world of the 1980s yuppie. If you’ve seen films like The Secret of My Success or Baby Boom, you know what we’re talking about. Yuppies worked hard, but they played even harder. And some of that play time involved cocktail parties and trips to restaurants like Gotham in New York…
Retro Foodie: An ’80s Valentine’s Day Dessert Buffet!
It’s hard to imagine a holiday that’s more ’80s-worthy than Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re single or coupled, this is a time to revel in the myriad of dessert-themed visuals that can’t help but conjure the decadence of the 1980s. If you’ve been reading Mirror80 this month, you know that we created two mood boards in preparation for this Retro Foodie photo shoot. The first celebrates the glam side of ’80s Valentine’s Day style. The second emphasizes everything cute and candy-colored in the realm of ’80s sweets. After much thought and consideration, we decided to go cute. After all, we can veer into glam territory for a range of foodie adventures. But how often can you have a full-on ’80s-style sweet fest?! Read on for more details…
Cute as an ’80s Valentine
As you know from our previous post on ’80s Valentine’s Day Style, I’m trying to pick a motif for an upcoming Retro Foodie event: a 1980s-themed Valentine’s Day dessert party. The first look played up the “glam” with crystal hearts, rose petals and champagne. In an over-the-top sort of way! Check out our first mood board here. Today it’s all about a style we like to call ’80s Cute–geometry, hearts, bright colors, dessert-like motifs and more! We couldn’t imagine a more appropriate theme for a party that celebrates the 1980s and sweets. But we’re equally drawn to ’80s schmaltzy glitz a la crystal and roses…
’80s Valentine’s Day Style
If you saw yesterday’s Retro Foodie post, you know how much we love to entertain! Next up: An ’80s-style Valentine’s Day dessert party. To prepare, we’re creating a series of mood boards to try and find a signature look for this event. Today it’s all about ’80s glamour–crystal, rose petals, and of course, strawberries and champagne…
