What does it feel like to walk through a dead mall? It’s a complicated blend of nostalgia, sorrow and magnificence. There’s no greater reminder of your own mortality than to see your childhood literally crumbling to the ground. Yet in the case of Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi, TX, it’s hard to wallow in the loss of a magical era when tropical plants are green and thriving, and reflective surfaces are shining with sunlight.
When it comes to large numbers of gorgeous retro design photos, Tumblr is where it’s at! When I started this blog 8 years ago, there were very few ’80s design images online. I would’ve given anything for the treasure trove of beautiful scans and screen shots we have at our fingertips today! That’s why this post is dedicated to highlighting 10 of my favorite Tumblrs for retro design inspiration.

During the holiday season of 2016, Saturday Night Live featured a song-filled video titled “The Christmas Candle”. The premise: an out-of-season peach candle is “re-gifted ’round the world in just one day.” This video inspired today’s candle swap, complete with retro-style candles that channel the ’80s and ’90s!
I had a few iridescent stickers in my collection as a child of the ’80s, and it seemed like a dream to find a soft rainbow of color peeking through the pearlescent shimmer. What’s not to love about iridescence?! Now it’s back on many a surface, from serving pieces and drinking glasses to shower curtains and purses. Call it an iridescent Halloween–I’m reveling in the pearly glow!
