Today we go back in time and spotlight Fall fashion trends from the ’80s that are back in full force. You may think the photos above and below were snapped this year, but think again. All came from publications featuring actual ’80s designs. First we showcase a tribal patterned fabric by Furphy Simpson (shown above), which boasts a variety of stripes and earth tones. Who says tribal wear is just for summer?
An ’80s Retrospective
From time to time, a 1980s-related event catches the eye of Mirror80, and we have to share it with our readers! Bishopsgate Institute’s Back to the 80s series is one of these very events! In fact, it’s a series of events that will be held in London beginning this month. If you live in London or are planning a trip to the city between now and early December, reserve your spot at one of these special evening engagements. Examining everything from ’80s fashion to the social dissent of the decade, Back to the 80s will include everything from special guests and panel discussions to a walking tour of key London sites!
’80s Fashion Highlights from Sammy Davis Vintage
I’ve recently had the pleasure of striking up a correspondence with Sammy Davis of Sammy Davis Vintage, a site dedicated to sharing the vintage love by highlighting quality fashion that stands the test of time. Not to mention, Sammy features a variety of vintage sellers, as well as specific fashion trends from an array of decades. Today we spotlight her article ’80s Clothing Trends You Love to Remember (or Wear!), as well as some amazing pics of 1980s dresses courtesy of Olive’s Very Vintage and modeled by none other than Sammy Davis herself!
The Return of Tassels and Chains
In her book 1980s Fashion Print, Marnie Fogg writes of ‘80s “Glamazon” fashion, which among other things included print designs featuring ribbons, bows, ropes, flags, swags, animal prints, and yes—tassels and chains! Guess what, folks? Glamazon fashion is back!
That’s right—the luxury and excess of ‘80s print design can be found on clothing from the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Forever 21. Get ready for some swanky trompe l’oeil greatness!
Check out the Mirror80 Tumblr!
Happy 2nd Birthday, Mirror80! Yes, today is the big 2! For our first birthday we threw a party. This year we celebrate by launching the Mirror80 tumblr! That’s right–we’ll be featuring our favorite ’80s art, fashion and interior design pics. From screen shots to modern takes on 1980s style we’ve got your favorite decade covered.
An ’80s Fashion Photo Shoot!
In “take two” of our ’80s photo shoot extravaganza, we travel to an office park where glass block and metal posts reign. Yes, folks, it may as well be 1985, and we’ve got the fashion to prove it! As a counterpart to our first featured ’80s photo shoot, Peter Tung of Peter Tung Photography organized yet another amazing shoot, this time featuring the modeling talents of the lovely Sarah Gardner of Kim Dawson Agency.
An ’80s-Fabulous Photo Shoot
It’s not everyday you get to cover an ’80s-style shoot photographed by one of your best friends. Yes, I was in for a treat this month when Peter Tung of Peter Tung Photography invited me to collaborate on not one, but two ’80s-themed shoots! Today we cover the first, which took place in Peter’s photography studio. This artistic project would not have been possible without the help of many talented individuals…
Neon Noir Fashion à la Risky Business
A weekend viewing of Risky Business starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay inspired today’s post. In case you haven’t seen this 1983 film directed by Paul Brickman, it focuses on high school student Joel (Cruise), specifically his shady pursuits after his parents leave town on vacation. Trouble begins with the arrival of a prostitute named Lana, played by De Mornay. A Neon Noir gem of a film, Risky Business earned praise from critics like Roger Ebert, who compared the movie to The Graduate, calling it “one of the smartest, funniest, most perceptive satires in a long time.” We couldn’t help but be drawn to Rebecca De Mornay’s wardrobe and the hypnotic soundtrack from Tangerine Dream…
Gymnastic Wear With ’80s Flair
I have my friend Art to thank for today’s post! He brought this gallery of headless rhythmic gymnasts to my attention, and once I got a glimpse of the body-contorting fun, it became clear that some of the leotards were a little bit ’80s… So in the spirit of the 2012 Summer Olympics, here are some amazing pics and flashy ensembles for your viewing enjoyment! Heads are optional.
Preparing for an ’80s Photo Shoot
I spent some time this weekend collaborating with talented photographer Peter Tung, a good friend who has organized two ’80s-themed photo shoots for this coming week in Austin, Texas! We are thrilled to be featuring retro finds from Austin-based vintage clothing store New Bohemia. They consistently offer amazing ’80s pieces like rompers, tank tops, dresses and large plastic jewelry (the white necklace above is one of my personal purchases from New Bohemia). Add the expertise of stylist Matthew Klimek of Butterfly Entertainment, and this promises to be an ’80s-fabulous shoot!
