Hi Everyone! I’m sharing a festive holiday DIY today, and this fun painting project can be used any time of the year to embellish gift bags and gift wrap. Memphis-Milano style takes center stage, along with metallic paint. Continue reading for a few easy steps that will help you create a DIY gift bag (or 10!) this season…
Supplies
Here’s what you’ll need to get started…
- paper gift bags in the colors of your choice
- metallic craft paint
- a paintbrush (such as a flat brush)
- saran wrap
- Paper or cloth to protect your work area
Instructions
Creating these patterned and textured bags couldn’t be more fun! All you need is a little bit of patience. For the noodle and sprinkle designs, I simply used a paintbrush to free-hand the pattern. You may need to use more than one coat of paint for each stroke. A flat brush works well here, and I dipped the other end of the brush in paint pressed it onto the surface of the bag to create the dots of the sprinkle pattern (at the far left below):
Metallic paint in shades of gold, silver and bronze adds just the right amount of shine to colorful paper bags:
For the bags with a textured look, simply take a piece of saran wrap and crinkle it into a form that you can hold in your hand. Dip it into the paint, and press it onto the surface of the bag. It’s a bit like sponge painting, but the wrinkles of the saran wrap make the pattern extra-interesting. Below you can see that I layered a couple of paint colors to add depth to the design:
Once the bags are dry, simply fill them with gifts and top them with tissue paper:
Wishing you and yours a sparkling holiday season! XOXO, Kate
