There’s definitely something holographic going on… If you read design blogs, you may have noticed the appearance of items such as holographic pillows, party decorations, and even manicures. Rather than exploring the ins and outs of holograms, the “holographic” trend is more of a focus on patterns that scatter the light. Think iridescent meets geometric. This trend inspired today’s photo shoot.
Rock Candy
I picked up some holographic foam core board and decided to start taking pictures. You should totally try it! This backdrop photographs beautifully, and if you find an angle that highlights the item you want to take a snapshot of (rather than a reflection of yourself in the silver surface), you’re set. I started with rock candy, because the geometric sugar crystals are the perfect complement to the geo forms of the holographic backdrop:
Rocks and Minerals
Speaking of crystalline structures, soon it was time to move on to rocks, minerals and crystals, starting with my large quartz specimen. I then incorporated rose quartz, a fluorite crystal, and a faceted blue glass bead into the pics. I love the way the holographic backdrop looks vivid and rainbow-hued when photographed from one angle, then silver and pastel when photographed from another. So versatile!
Holographic Crystals
Then it was time for the crystal decor. Like the egg below, which reminds me of the film Risky Business! The egg from the movie was bigger, but I’m pretty sure I received this one as a gift in the ’80s, so it’s authentic–ha! A Deco-style crystal vase finishes off this batch of photos. The crystal reflects beautifully in the surface of the holographic board.
Sprinkles on Top
And finally, everything is better when you add sprinkles. So I did! Sugar sprinkles, to be exact. Rainbow sugar sprinkles, to be even more exact.
Thanks for reading and checking out the photos. I’ll be back tomorrow with an original recipe that celebrates an ’80s junk food favorite. Stay tuned…

Wonderful! A complete joy for the senses 🙂 Thank you Kate, this has made me smile today, just beautiful. I adore crystal! I’m in the planning stage of making my own little fairy garden for our patio and have been considering using some of my smaller crystals (tumblestones) as stepping stones and as the backs of tiny garden chairs. Thank you for sharing, love this post, hugs xx
