Today Mirror80 presents a special edition of Still Life Style, highlighting a collection of simple colorful objects that create still life magic when combined. In my living room, I keep an IKEA glass display case that serves as a canvas for my rotating installation of still life vignettes. I’m a big fan of simple, easy-to-find materials, as well as vibrant colors such as blue, red and yellow. Below you’ll find a few snapshots of my favorite objects and combinations:
Interesting items to use in still life vignettes include:
- individual marble tiles from the flooring store
- mineral samples
- wooden forms (such as cubes and squares – purchased at craft stores like Michael’s)
- dollar store finds (ping pong balls, rubber band balls, sporty toys in vibrant tones)
- colorful vases and containers, such as this set from IKEA
- craft foam sheeting (which I sometimes use to cover wooden cubes)
When combining materials in still life vignettes…
- get sculptural: stack items to create interesting forms and structures
- know when less is more
- create vivid groupings based on color
- incorporate DIY creations, such as tile embellished with marble contact paper
- let your inner artist emerge; go with your creative instincts
Most importantly, have fun! Still life vignettes rarely take themselves seriously…
