This winter has been colder than usual in my neck of the woods, and there have been plenty of nights that involved miserable weather–the kind that makes it anything but tempting to go out. So I decided to master the art of staying in. What does it take to have a decadent night at home? Whether it’s dinner for one, an evening with your special someone or a small gathering of friends, here are a few ideas for enjoying an ’80s-style night in!
1. Atmosphere
For some, atmosphere involves a roaring fire and an arrangement of lit candles. For me, it involves an ’80s Deco vase filled with lilies. And some twinkle lights, which I’ve draped on the tropical centerpiece featured in this post.
2. Treats
The perfect night in also involves something that you don’t enjoy every other night of the week. Like an assortment of chocolates. Or a dinner you’ve created by trying out a new recipe. Or a glass of bubbly! Believe it or not, the “bubbly” at the top of this post is actually a mixture of blood orange simple syrup and San Pellegrino. Champagne will also work…
3. Creativity
When I feel inspired, I feel rejuvenated. What inspires you? There’s nothing like watching an interesting film or reading an amazing book. Above we see two of my favorites: 1980s Fashion Print by Marnie Fogg and Memphis: Objects, Furniture and Patterns by Richard Horn. The latter was a gift from my friends Chad and Clare, the creators of Tumblr fave Zonkout.
4. Relaxation
Vegging out is a must when it comes to a relaxing night in. How do you unwind? A spa-style evening of bath and beauty? A classic ’80s movie? A long nap?
I want to hear your ideas about atmosphere, treats, creativity and relaxation for the perfect night in. What have I forgotten? List movies, books and other fun tidbits by leaving a comment below…

My idea of a night in (weather’s been bad here too) is putting 80s dance tunes in the CD player, mix up a few drinks, and dance the night away. That’s what we did on New Year’s Eve; it was snowing really bad.

I’ve been dancing the night away this winter as well, often with ’80s music videos in the background. It’s undeniably fun, and it’s great exercise! Thanks for reminding me about the power of ’80s music on a night in.
