Hi Everyone! Today we begin a new series called Retro Roundup. Every couple of weeks, we’ll take a look at the latest news and creative endeavors of the “recent retro” nature. This includes items from decades past, as well as new ways that retro style is emerging in today’s world of fashion, art, design and pop culture. Kind of a “check this out” celebration! We also invite you to add your discoveries in the comments section below. And now for our first installment…
TOP CLUSTER (clockwise from the top left):
Have you checked out Retrophilia, a fabulous blog with a heavy focus on interior design from the 1980s? Lots of amazing Scandinavian design inspiration, including DIY curtains made from the material shown at the top left of the montage above.
Ferm Living offers an amazing line of modern geometric home decor products, like the small grid basket, which is perfect for stashing items you’d rather keep out of sight.
We love the product design of Joy Cho from Oh Joy! For the last few seasons, she’s partnered with Target to release entertaining/party products that are super affordable and unbelievably stylish. We’ve featured her designs in our Retro Foodie photo shoots, including our Halt and Catch Fire Viewing Party and our recent Tropical Party. Yesterday her Oh Joy for Target Fall Collection launched, and we can’t wait to pick up her Geometric Paper Plates and Square Flecks Rectangle Paper Plates.
See the vivid photo of favorite ’80s pop group ABC above? It’s the cover art for their 1982 album The Lexicon of Love, one of our all-time favorites. It’s perfect for parties, perfect for working out, perfect for chilling out…perfect from start to finish! The photo was taken by Gered Mankowitz. See more of his work at NME.
MIDDLE CLUSTER (clockwise from the top left):
Did you miss our recent DIY Geo Paper Art project? We love creating original DIY projects that celebrate creativity on a budget!
There’s a still life revival occurring at this very moment, and rather than featuring bowls of fruit and vases of flowers, this new brand of still life photography revels in geometry, ’80s motifs, everyday objects and high-end products. We love the work of Kitsch Nitsch!
See the grafitti-covered subway car above? It serves as inspiration for artist Shaina Stigler’s latest re-creation: a 1980s New York subway car, complete with gritty style.
BOTTOM CLUSTER (clockwise from the top left):
We’re loving the work of photographer Kate Jackling, particularly her pieces that shine the spotlight on tropical greenery, reflective surfaces and dramatic angles.
One of our favorite blogs in Bri Emery’s Design Love Fest, which is filled with fashion, interior, culinary and graphic design goodness. The blog’s Hand-Drawn Love series showcases hand-drawn type art inspired by the work of artists, designers, photographers and illustrators such as Esther Cox.
We end with one last still life spotlight: the work of Florent Tanet. Check out her Tumblr here.
