Welcome to our 5th installment of ’80s Music Video Land, a series that explores the look and feel of our favorite videos from The Decade of Decadence. Today’s featured video: “A Forest” by The Cure. There’s something about early Cure videos that takes us to another place. If you haven’t yet checked out selections like “Let’s Go to Bed” and “The Walk,” do yourself a favor and give them a look. They’re wonderfully bizarre, there’s an element of performance art to them, and if you’re into fashion, you’ll appreciate Robert Smith’s early wardrobe choices (such as fitted sweaters in vibrant hues and relaxed white button-downs).
This brings us to the videos themselves. If you live in the U.S., you may find it hard to access these online. We’ve had luck with Dailymotion, even if the quality isn’t always flawless. Nonetheless, we couldn’t NOT feature an early Cure video in this series, so we’re moving forward! Check out some screen shots from “A Forest,” shown below:
Now we’ll take a look at the video, which features an abundance of green and blue lighting, scenes of the band performing (from an actual Top of the Pops performance in 1980), and numerous panoramic shots of a forest run through a video filter:
