Happy Tuesday, Everyone! Hope your weekend was a fabulous! I spent much of the weekend painting cabinets, so… I thought I’d share the beginnings of my laundry room makeover with you. My hubby and I moved into our place this past summer, and we’ve been working on each room little by little. After we made some changes such as replacing the bathroom countertops, we had to put other purchases on hold. Such as a washer and dryer. Well, the time has come to finally make these appliances our own. And it’s also time to stop neglecting our laundry room!
One reason for the neglect… There was a cabinet blocking the area where we need to install the washer and dryer. We finally had the cabinet relocated to the opposite wall last week, which was hard on the paint job. What a perfect opportunity for a cabinet makeover!
I went back and forth on the design for these cabinets. I LOVE geometric motifs, and there was quite a bit of brainstorming. You can read about some of the designs that inspired me in this post I wrote for Decoist.
Have you noticed that geometric designs (particularly triangles) are everywhere these days? I love their simplicity, but I wanted to make sure to choose a design that could weather the next few years. In other words, nothing too trendy.
The cabinet was originally a shade of cream, and I definitely wanted to leave some of this color visible so the painted design would integrate well with the rest of the room. As you can see, this room is in need of a LOT of TLC. Which is why we went with a bold shade of tomato red, one of my favorite colors. In fact, when we bought the paint, I was wearing a bright tomato red t-shirt with a matching shade of lipstick. I was actually a little embarrassed. ; – )
Before deciding on red, we considered painting the cabinet mint green and deep mauve, a combo inspired by Diane Keaton’s ’80s-fabulous kitchen in the film Baby Boom. But ultimately we went with red, because let’s face it–this room needs a major wake-up call.
The washer and dryer arrive tomorrow. I can’t wait to make this room a functional space and complete the makeover. I promise to share the results in the coming weeks.
Until then, I’d love to hear about your DIY projects and redecorating plans…
