A Retro New Year’s Eve Party

A Retro New Year's Eve

A Retro New Year’s Eve

Hi, Everyone! Can you believe it’s almost 2014? What are your New Year’s Eve plans? My hubby and I were thinking of throwing a party… But over the course of the last month or so, we’ve dealt with our fair share of chaos, including a car accident and a surgery. So going out to eat, then coming back home to toast the New Year in a low-key fashion sounded just right to us this year. But that didn’t stop me from staging a Retro Foodie photo shoot in honor of the upcoming holiday. And this vignette will also work for an awards show party (the Golden Globes and the Oscars are on the horizon, right?!). So read on for all the details…

The palette: silver, gold and teal with hints of rose. The vases you see above and below are from Z Gallerie. Remember them from our Mirror80 Holiday Gift Guide? At just $5.95 apiece, they’re the perfect combination of mirrors, glass and clean-lined flair. I filled them with metallic floral embellishments I found at my favorite grocery store/market. For the vases and flowers together, I paid no more than $25. Not bad! I also taped some fishing line between the vases, then made a banner by draping metallic shred and gold ribbon over the string.

I’ll definitely keep these floral statements around for awards show season, especially since silver and gold are very “in” this year…

Let’s check out some highlights from the “party,” complete with my favorite runner from West Elm (which you might recognize from our holiday posts, such as this decor post and the mood board that inspired today’s photo shoot):

About the food and drink… I used a combination of glass champagne flutes and teal plastic flutes to serve the bubbly. I know, plastic flutes are tacky, right? But if you’re showcasing retro style with a heavy emphasis on the ’80s, now is the time to introduce a little teal plastic into the palette. And when it comes to the drinks, you can’t go wrong with classic champagne. But for a special twist, try adding a dash of rosewater to the bubbly, as well as a bit of cranberry juice to give the drinks a rosy tint. Some people add sugar as well, but I prefer to keep it simple…and not too sweet! I used about 1/2 teaspoon of rosewater for each glass of champagne, but you can add more or less to suit your taste…

The food: brie and chocolate. Let’s start with the sweets! You can make your own truffles or cake balls. Or you can do what I did and set out some delicious store-bought candy that does the trick! Our dear friends Marilyn and Joe gave us a generous tin of Toffee-ettes from See’s Candy. It was the perfect Christmas gift that keeps on giving in the new year. Plus, the buttery flavor of the toffee is an ideal complement to the champagne.

For the cheese and crackers, I topped Pita Bites with brie, then added pomegranate seeds, lemon zest and fresh mint. The result: something salty, with a hint of tangy sweetness. Perfection!

What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? Will you be toasting at home or celebrating out on the town? Mirror80 wishes you a safe and happy celebration…and a glorious 2014!!!
