’80s DIY: A Floral Tower

If you’ve been reading Mirror80 this month, you know it’s been my dream to construct a sculptural floral arrangement in a ceramic round planter. Today we debut the DIY results, and we couldn’t be more excited! This project has an undeniably ’80s look. What keeps it from looking outdated? You have to commit 100% to clearly taking it over the top. Bright colors and lots of height help to achieve this goal, as you’ll see below…

First let’s talk supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • One ceramic round planter in the shade of your choice
  • A Styrofoam disc that will fit neatly inside the planter
  • Faux flowers
  • Scissors or clippers for trimming the floral stems to the desired height

Yes, folks, it’s as easy as trimming the flowers and spearing them into the foam! Don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first time. That foam disc has a lot of surface area–simply spear a new hole to move the foliage around. To make the arrangement pop, it helps to select at least a few bright flowers in vivid shades, such as the radiant orange shown above and below. To hide the remaining view of the foam disc, you can either use floral moss (which is pretty messy), or simply cut a few full flowers super short, then spear them into the foam at the base so the petals hide the disc.

A few years ago I was redecorating my room and my mom and I made something similar to this. She still has hers from the 80s hangin’ around our living room though, although she spent a pretty penny on it, and hers are all mauve and black with swirly silver things inside, it’s got this deco mauve vase. In fact, my mom still has most of her 1980s furniture. I love reading this blog it’s extremely inspiring.

Thanks so much for your kind words! And I love hearing how people use ’80s design in their own homes. Your mom’s mauve and black floral arrangement sounds amazing!!!
