So what are we looking at here?… It’s a skit from a mid-’80s episode of Saturday Night Live, a spoof of those bizarro 1980s Calvin Klein “Obsession” commercials that featured stark white interiors, models clad in black, and verse that was both obscure and meaningless at the same time. And the occasional slap in the face. In our first video pick, the SNL gang takes a stab at it with their commercial parody titled “Compulsion.” Watch it below:
Next we have a parody that has to be from around 1987, when Gary Hart was still hopeful for earning the nomination as the Democratic party’s presidential candidate. But clearly after he was accused of cheating with model Donna Rice. Or perhaps he’d already fallen from grace… At any rate, SNL regular Jan Hooks is clad in ’80s-fabulous attire (love the earrings), and her sparse home is the epitome of ’80s chic. She had vertical blinds and vases–what more is needed?!
Watch the skit below and find out why you just can’t get Gary Hart out of your mind…
Next we enjoy an ’80s SNL commercial parody for XYNEX office systems. You’ll love the retro copy machines, printers and computers featured in the skit. We love the mini-blinds and floral arrangements!
To see an office filled with people who have too much time on their hands, watch the skit below:
Our last spoof features Anthony Michael Hall, who rose to fame in ’80s movie classics like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. At the young age of 17, Hall joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for the show’s 1985-86 season. Though he only remained there a year, he is still to this day the youngest cast member in the history of the show. Below he stars in a commercial parody for Wacky Glue. We’re jazzed about the living room featured at the end of the skit. Is that an Arco lamp? Nice wall art too!
Watch the skit below. And yes, that’s Randy Quaid playing Hall’s Father!
