The Style Council
Tomorrow is the first official day of fall! On this last day of summer, we revel in warmth one more time before saying goodbye to the season of swimming, cutoffs and lounging. In today’s Friday Video Pick, “Long Hot Summer” by The Style Council, we see singer Paul Weller drift down the river in a little boat while bandmate Mick Talbot steers. Sun shines through the treetops, and the two ham it up, much like when they cycled through the English countryside while belting out “My Ever Changing Moods.” Today it’s all about those lazy summer days on the water. In case you’re not already a fan of The Style Council, the band was formed in 1983 by Paul Weller (former lead singer of The Jam) and keyboardist Mick Talbot. Straying from the punk roots of The Jam, The Style Council took an R&B, soulful turn, creating some amazing tracks thanks to Weller’s gorgeous voice. Throw in the musical talent and strong backup vocals of Mick Talbot, and the band’s sound was nothing short of powerful.
Over time, The Style Council collaborated with a variety of musicians, such as Weller’s then-wife, vocalist Dee C. Lee (shown at the left in the image above). “Long Hot Summer” was a huge hit, and we guarantee that after watching this video, you’ll be singing “Don’t matter what I do” all day long! A funny side note: according to Wikipedia, the summer in which this track was released (’83) turned out to be the hottest in Britain on record. Enjoy the video, and Happy Friday!
