It’s Friday, and boy, has this been a long week! The kind where you feel like you’re just going through the motions, from appointment to appointment. Until you walk into your newly remodeled doctor’s office and see that they’ve inadvertently gone retro. ’70s/’80s to be exact! Yes, this really happened, and I immediately took out my cell phone and started snapping pictures of the metallic cylinder planter filled with a tropical Dracaena. And the modular seating! When I explained to the receptionist that I write about 1980s interior design, she smiled, then looked confused. Then she looked at me again, and she looked even more confused. Did I mention that she looked confused?
It’s happening all over the country, and it has been for years. Remodeled commercial spaces are moving backwards, not forwards. And we couldn’t be happier about it! The standard for lobby furniture was somehow set in the ’70s and ’80s. “If you want modern, go with cylinder tables, shiny round planters, and clean-lined modular seating.” The seed was planted, and I have a hunch it will forever bloom. Did the folks at my doctor’s office go ’80s on purpose? Perhaps. Maybe we should all be ordering our furniture from commercial suppliers! Happy Friday!
