Before we leap into 2018, I wanted to take a look back at some of my very favorite posts of 2017. It’s been an interesting year, as I was focused on balancing blogging, work and life as a new mom; upgrading the quality of each post; taking better photos; and finding a way to stay true to authentic ’80s design while celebrating the many ways that it’s re-emerging in the mainstream and beyond.
I will continue to strike this balance in the new year, delivering plenty of posts that feature trends from the recent retro (in addition to new finds that channel the past). I just ordered a stack of books showcasing various design elements from the Decade of Decadence, and I can’t wait to share highlights with you! Until then, Happy New Year, and here’s a Mirror80 recap of 2017. Click on the headings below for access to the original posts…
Color Palette Possibilities
Because this collection of images from ’80s design books will inspire you as you tackle retro-modern design projects in the new year!
An Interview with Katie Rispoli Keaotamai
When an architectural and cultural history professional with a love of ’80s design says yes to an interview (and contributes a slew of beautiful photos that highlight Postmodern architecture), there are MANY reasons to celebrate!
A Rainbow Unicorn Milkshake
How could I pass up a chance to jump on the rainbow unicorn bandwagon?! Especially when rainbow unicorns were some of my favorite ’80s stickers as a kid. I don’t share many recipes on the blog, but this one couldn’t be easier to create, or more fun to consume.
IKEA’s new AVSIKTLIG Collection
This collection from IKEA completely blew my mind. To create the finished products, IKEA collaborated with a design group that originally formed in 1970 and produced one of my favorite retro zigzag patterns of all time (which reappeared in the collection, as you can see on the napkins above)!
’80s Movie Style: Weekend at Bernie’s
This is what happens when you watch an ’80s movie on a whim over 4th of July weekend and spend the next week obsessively taking screen shots of the design magic!
Decorating with ’80s Deco Vases
When I first started this blog in 2010, I was building my collection of ’80s Deco vases by visiting thrift stores like Goodwill and Savers. So you could say that this post is a passion project that’s long overdue…
An ’80s Summer Playlist
Sharing music video playlists is one of my greatest joys as a blogger. Summer-themed or not, this playlist is one of my all-time faves.
Back to School, Retro-Style
’80s campus movie quotes and actual ’80s school supplies (with a few new pieces thrown in) make this post festive and fun. Trapper Keeper, anyone?!
Do These 3 Classic ’80s Cocktails Hold Up?
Which is your favorite?: the Kamikaze, the Tequila Sunrise or the White Russian? Details in the post.
DIY Weepuls with Halloween Flair
Remember the Weepuls?! This DIY project transcends Halloween season. In fact, rumor has it that I may be bringing these little guys back for Valentine’s Day.
Wishing you and yours a stellar New Year! Thank you for your support, your comments, and your enthusiasm for retro-modern design. See you in 2018!!! XOXO, Kate
