Can you believe we’re in the last two weeks of 2016?! Before everyone winds down for the holidays, I wanted to share my favorite Mirror80 posts from the past year. There were some fun developments, from forming the ’80s Design group on Facebook to starting the Mirror80 Playlist series (more to come in the year ahead). Speaking of 2017, I have some exciting projects in the works, and I can’t wait to see how Mirror80 grows in the next 12 months. Until then, here are some highlights from 2016…
2016 at Mirror80…
Above and below, we see Mirror80’s very first photo shoot from 2016: Tea Time, Retro-Style. Inspired by product photography and teapots from the 1980s, the shoot was a chance to play with color, form…and even food!
Totem style took center stage in our Stackables shoot, featuring sculptural arrangements using materials such as vases, bows and dollar store trinkets. See the entire shoot here.
When rock candy meets rainbows, you have a holographic wonderland. This other-worldly shoot also featured items such as crystal decor, minerals, and sprinkles…
Some of my favorite Mirror80 posts involve rounding up images of interiors from the 1980s. Aren’t retro design trends the best?! There’s nothing like carpeted stairs, platform beds, and modern railing in the middle of a multi-level living room! Below we see a highlights from a post featuring a collection of 1980s bathrooms. I couldn’t resist featuring an indoor pool. It counts as a giant bathtub, right?!
This spring, my bestie Jon from Happy Mundane came to visit. And we collaborated on this Palm Party. Thank you, Jon. I can’t think of anyone more fun to work and play with!
And then it was summer! And I couldn’t help but stage a vibrant shoot featuring breezy items like colorful sand and little drink umbrellas…
After my Palm Party collaboration with Jon, I went to visit him in California. So. Much. Fun! I basically took pictures everywhere I went. Luckily he never complained about me always being two steps behind him with a digital device glued to my face. Snap! I shared my pics featuring lots of neon, palms and ocean views in this post.
When Graham & Brown contacted me about hosting a wallpaper giveaway on Mirror80, I couldn’t have been more excited! I jumped at the chance to reward one lucky reader, and to stage a photo shoot featuring my favorite wallpaper ever: Cloud Nine. While the giveaway has long passed, I still enjoy looking at the photos from the shoot.
I know Mirror80 isn’t a food blog. But I couldn’t resist the urge to whip up a batch of Reese’s Peanut Butter Milkshakes as Halloween approached. They are every bit as decadent as they look! Get the recipe here.
Speaking of Halloween…each year I have a tradition of doing a radiant photo shoot with a colorful wig. So far, this pink number has been my favorite! I even worked some plants into the post, which was all about embracing color.
Gift wrap. Every holiday season, I have to make some of it. This year, I took some craft paint to paper bags for a Memphis-style approach to DIY gift bags!
So it’s only been days since I posted this New Year’s Eve shoot, but it’s already one of my all-time favorites. Because this girl loves a little sparkle! I’ve also always wanted to try making those drink stirrers with the tinsel balls on top…

In 2017, I have a few surprises in store, but you can expect to see even more of my favorite Mirror80 series. For example, ’80s Movie Style explores the look of our favorite retro flicks! As mentioned at the very top of the post, this is the year I started featuring playlists! I enjoy rounding up collections of YouTube videos with a common theme. First up was the ’80s Halloween playlist, followed by Festive Jams and Sophisti-pop!
This past August I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing David Zakrzewski for the ’80s Connection series. He recounted 1980s design details from his wealth of experience in interior decorating and retail sales during the Decade of Decadence. Such a fabulous interview! Expect more of these conversations in 2017, as I’ll check in with artists and designers who celebrate retro style on a daily basis (and earn a living in creative careers–this fascinates me).
