Today at Mirror80, it’s all about the swank. These ’80s interiors beg to be noticed! Whether they pile on the floor cushions or layer on the mirrors, these are the rooms you want to lounge in once darkness falls. There may not be smoke, but in a couple of these spaces, there may as well be a smoke machine, because there’s a definite club vibe going on. The “disco pad” above was designed by Charles Damga. The request: to create a New York night spot in the sky. Believe it or not, this space is bathed in soft gray and lavender during the day. But the effective use of mood lighting (hello, red and blue!) really makes it come alive during the evenings. And what’s not to love about the “broken wall” effect (created by a double wall), or that indoor fountain/coffee table feature?! [from Decoration and Design for the 80’s by Pamela Ferguson]
Above we see a gleaming living area featuring polished chrome furniture, a lacquered coffee table, and white semi-gloss paint with a touch of green. Mirrored strips rule in the dining room below, creating an alluring series of reflections. Both photos come from The Decorating Book by Mary Gilliatt.
In the next image, we see a helium-and-argon light fixture, which mimics the lines and curves of the granite counter. Black glass covers the appliances in this kitchen featured in The International Book of Lofts (1986).
Here’s a powder room from that very same New York Garment District loft. It reflects the look of the entire home: slick. Bring on the sleek and shiny surfaces! The sink and counter below are stainless steel:
Mirrors were frequently used in the ’80s, and they really came in handy when featured in compact apartments like this next studio. The mirrored wall really opens up the room.
