Hi Everyone! Just wanted to update you on Mirror80’s latest design project–my new place! If you’ve been following the blog over the last month or so, you know there have been some fun decisions along the way, including selecting a pendant light for the dining room (an ongoing saga) and brainstorming ways to “just go with” the ’80s-style kitchen–which just happens to be my favorite room in the house!
Today I thought I’d share the “before” pictures of the living/dining room and the kitchen, to be followed by the “afters” in a few weeks. There’s still much work to be done and our budget is limited! Above we see the living room, complete with a fireplace featuring slanted wood paneling. Which unfortunately must be painted due to the brown tile that surrounds it, and the fact that the new wooden floor of the living room is too similar in color. We’re considering creating a gradient effect with the paint to accent the diagonal lines of the paneling–similar to the super skinny excerpt of a paint sample card shown in the middle of the image above.
As of now, a chrome ball pendant light like this selection from Tom Dixon (shown above) is a favorite possibility for the dining room portion of the space. Below we see the kitchen, as well as the fruit bowl and chrome canisters I hope will give the space a “retro meets modern” look.
We’ll keep you updated on the progress, folks… Hope your week is off to a great start!

Here’s an 80s Ikea kitchen if it’s any use for inspiration:

Love these pics–especially all of the metallic touches! Thanks for the inspiration!

Very interested to see how this all comes out. If you’re going for a gray theme, you could consider adding salmon touches here and there as those 2 colours always look very mid-late 80s, as does gray and light yellow.
