Happy Wednesday, Everyone! Here in beautiful Austin, TX, the South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals are well underway. I’m a sucker for the SXSW Film Festival, not only because this is always Austin’s most beautiful weather week of the year, but because seeing amazing film after film is absolutely addictive. You may remember that last year I saw and reviewed a great documentary called Beauty Is Embarrassing, featuring artist Wayne White (who designed sets and puppets for the hit ’80s children’s show Pee-wee’s Playhouse). This year the festival has put me in the mood to take a look back at some fun Mirror80 posts featuring some key 1980s films!
At the top of the montage above, we see a screen shot of actress Sean Young from the groundbreaking 1982 film Blade Runner. This film is the reason I’m passionate about movies. Read about Blade Runner fashion here, view this modern room match-up inspired by Blade Runner decor, then check out some radiant screen shots from this gorgeous film. Yeah, we’re a little gaga over Blade Runner here at Mirror80.
Next we celebrate Whit Stillman’s Metropolitan, which truly celebrates the spirit of independent film. In fact, this gem of a pic from 1990 won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. Written by Stillman between 1984-1988, the movie is based on a series of events from the director’s life. Read about the plot, fashion and interiors of this charming college student-centered movie here. Above (middle row, left), we see Metropolitan actress Isabel Gillies, whose earrings we would die for.
To her right is Daryl Hannah in the movie Splash. As a kid, I saw the preview for this mermaid-themed romantic comedy and dreamed of nothing else but seeing the film as soon as possible. And it did not disappoint! Read about the fashion and interiors here. We end with a screen shot from 1983’s Risky Business, which represents Neon Noir at its finest. At the bottom of the montage we see the lovely Rebecca De Mornay in a stylish screen shot. Read about the movie’s music and killer fashion here.
Hope you’re having a lovely week, however you choose to spend it! If there’s gorgeous weather where you live, make sure you get outside to revel in the spring possibilities…

These are all so perfect!
Was thinking about all do the fashion and interiors in Less Than Zero as well as Wall Street and the French New Wave masterpiece Diva. Glen Closes’ apartment in Fatal Attraction is top notch!
Love your work and have been reading through all of your archives!
This blog brings me back to the better of my youth!
PS. The Sloan Rangers Handbook is amazing and hard to find. Sure you already are aware of it.
