Today’s Friday Video Pick is not from the ’80s, but it might as well be. What do you get when you mix a lead singer whose style evokes Thompson Twins’ vocalist Tom Bailey, verses that recall the guitar magic of Aztec Camera, a chorus with the power of Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ “Come on Eileen,” and the wardrobe of James Spader’s ’80s preppy villains? The video for “Two Doors Down” by Mystery Jets!
Yes, this piece is a throwback to the 1980s, complete with background graphics based on signature motifs and designer fabrics from our favorite decade. Who would’ve thought “Two Doors Down” was written in 2008? In fact, in October 2011, NME named it as #100 on its list of the “150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years.” Adding to its modern appeal are the cheeky updates in the video’s visuals, including vertical neon lights that reference the ’80s but bear resemblance to contemporary stage setups of groups like Cut Copy. Mystery Jets are based in England, and checking out their repertoire is definitely worthwhile.
It you haven’t heard this track, you’re in for a treat–it will make you happy! It’s a great discovery, especially since I happened to hear it for the first time while eating in an empty McCormick & Schmicks on a Wednesday. Happy Friday!
