Today we recreate the look of Andrew McCarthy’s family living room from the 1987 film Less Than Zero. In this movie loosely based on the novel by Brett Easton Ellis (written when Ellis was only 21!), McCarthy plays Clay, a college student who returns home for Christmas break to discover that his close friends have been deeply affected by drug abuse and despair. OK, so you’re not going to see this one on the Hallmark Channel this season, but the decor is out of this world. Today we focus on the ’80s interior that served as the centerpiece of the film’s Christmas scenes. Here is the result….
Decor inspired by the film Less Than Zero
Why the room works: because there’s power in keeping it simple! While we wouldn’t dream of topping the designer pieces featured in the film, here is a similar Holiday look using a curved black sectional sofa, a glass-top coffee table and a gray rug. The modular curved full leather sofa from Aude Furniture proves that sectionals are making a comeback, while the Como round glass coffee table from DCG Stores adds polish and elegance to the space.
The Surya Mystique gray rug from RUGS USA.com unites the room’s decorative elements, while red metallic taper candles from Crafted Candles add a touch of Holiday sophistication. And speaking of Holiday decor, we can’t forget the classic sheen of a Kingswood white fir pencil Christmas tree (available at Meijer). Love the slim elegance of this one!
The Less Than Zero set designers (led by production designer Barbara Ling and set decorator Nancy Nye) opted for a metallic motif to permeate the film’s Holiday decor. We uncovered a few finds to keep the modern subtlety alive. A 50-count ornament set in silver from Target sets the stage, while glitter ball ornaments in light blue and silver from Crate & Barrel add accents that sparkle.
As we move into December, remember that today’s chic can evoke yesterday’s sleek. 1980s influences are alive and well, and there’s no better time to call on them than the Holiday Season. Enjoy!
