In the spirit of ’80s graphic design, we set out to select a mind-blowingly stylish video for today’s Friday Video Pick. A video that could be a Trapper Keeper if it materialized into a school supply. There was only one choice for us: “Bulletproof” by La Roux! It may not be from the ’80s or even an ’80s copycat, but moments of ’80s influence can’t be denied. From the black and white grids to the floating geometric shapes, it’s hard to keep up with the visual changes packed into this 3 1/2 minute work of art! The beginning even features a backdrop that evokes the color and pattern combinations present in the design of ’80s powerhouse collective The Memphis Group.
But the fun isn’t a carbon copy of ’80s design. Far from it! The images have a clarity and form that are more crisp and detailed than even the most intense 3-D artwork from the Trapper Keeper Designer Series! Directed by UFO, the video is unmistakably modern, not a throwback to the ’80s. Let’s just say there are instances of ’80s throwback scattered throughout this 2009 gem from English duo La Roux.
While the hair of singer Elly Jackson has been compared to the signature ‘do of A Flock of Seagulls’ Mike Score, Jackson’s style is not easily matched. Take this video–while she could’ve been decked out in Tron-inspired get-ups, she instead sports ensembles that feature puffed sleeves, chain-link accents, cameo medallions and a jacket reminiscent of the artwork of Piet Mondrian. Combine her ever-shifting wardrobe with the ever-changing scenery, and this is eye candy at the most intense level.
