The ’80s teen scene rules this week at Mirror80, so we couldn’t resist posting this gem of a video by the Wolfgramm siblings, who together formed The Jets, an ’80s pop band whose hit “Crush on You” is now a staple at hipster parties.
In the video for “You Got It All,” lead singer Elizabeth Wolfgramm falls for a handsome, thick sweater-clad customer at the malt shop where she works. Through the magic of video editing (and a transitional cut largely driven by the image of a soda straw), we are whisked away to a night club where metallic evening wear, large shoulder pads and an even larger bow take us from the pastel world of the teen eatery to the glamour of evening romance.
In our earlier post on the ’80s teen hangout, we noted how ’50s nostalgia crept into depictions of ’80s teen life. In this video, the “’80s take” on the ’50s is virtually eliminated, as the malt shot is a more direct ’50s knock-off. But the fashion-forward siblings of The Jets bring the video into the ’80s present.
Note the colorful shirt/undershirt/vest combinations of the band’s male members as they sit at the counter. How about the over-sized jewelry and plethora of hair ribbon that jazz up the waitress uniforms of the band’s female members? Or the way the video’s love interest disappears in a whirlwind of ’80s pastel graphic design genius in the midst of a smoke machine max-out?
Sit back and enjoy this tribute to teen love…and Happy Friday!
