Still Life Style: Foodie-Fabulous

November 3, 2014 by Kate Leave a Comment

November is officially in progress, and I’m planning a feast-themed Retro Foodie photo shoot with still life style. This is not your mother’s Thanksgiving meal, folks! For the shoot, I’m drawing lots of inspiration from still life art direction and photography, and I thought I’d share some of my favorite images with you in today’s post. Above we see still life photography from Sarah Hogan. Spice, anyone?! Below we see an image from the Veracious Bloom series of art director and still life artist Sonia Rentsch (with photography by Willem-Dirk):

One of today’s biggest still life stars is definitely produce. Fruits, veggies and other edibles are constantly being re-imagined in clever photos that elevate them to a new artistic plane. I’m loving the use of mirrors in these images from the You Melon series by photographer David Abrahams:

Today’s images have inspired me to incorporate chunks of marble and wood into my photo shoot, as well as mirrors. Then again, there’s nothing like an artfully arranged spread of citrus fruit. This refreshing image is available for purchase through the Etsy shop of photographer Amy Roth:

One thing that’s sure to appear at my feast table: a cheese plate. This image by photographer and art director Florent Tanet reminds me that how you arrange the elements is just as important as what’s on display:

Speaking of artfully arranged foodie vignettes, how delicious are these images from the A Balanced Diet series by Sonia Rentsch? Once again, the photography is by Willem-Dirk:

Another key ingredient of an artful still life: an element of the unexpected. Did someone say scrunchie?! I’m a big fan of the Scrunchie series by art director and set designer Katie Fotis and photographer Catherine Losing. In fact, this series was born when the two collaborators began reminiscing about the ’90s, from The Spice Girls to Ms. Fotis’ scrunchie collection. The rest is history:

I’ll end today’s roundup with a pair of images from photographer Niklas Alm, who manages to bring pure magic to a plate of meat and potatoes. Need I say more?…

Stay tuned for a feast-themed post next week. Thanks to the images above, I’m filled with still life inspiration!
