During Mirror80’s first year, we featured a post on ’80s vanity style. You know–the surface of a dresser or counter, often filled with those pretty little items we use for grooming, with some extra baubles thrown in. Today we update that piece by taking another look at the ’80s vanity. And we start by going glam! Stay tuned for a second vanity piece next week, when we’ll get a little more playful and colorful with our ’80s style…
5 New Finds With a Hint of Retro Style
Happy Wednesday, Everyone! Today I thought I’d share my 5 favorite purchases from this past summer. As many of you know, we moved in early June, and it’s been a bit of a design whirlwind ever since. But not in the way you’d think. We are on a tight budget, so we were limited in what we could buy right away. The solution: purchasing a few items to add some retro-style flair to the place, then gradually saving up for the bigger pieces. But for now, check out these timeless finds that add a hint of ’80s style to our eclectic interior…
New Retro Bedroom Decor
Happy Friday, Everyone! While researching this article on new fall decor finds, I came across a slew of modern pieces with a hint of retro style. In fact, if I hadn’t been so set on ’80s country florals as a pre-teen, the comforter above could have been a staple in my own bedroom! I’m loving the fact that many of today’s glamorous interior design items have a slight 1980s vibe. Let’s call it “Dynasty Chic”! Read on for more details…
Vintage ’80s Deco Finds
Happy Wednesday, Everyone! I’ve been in a thrifting mood lately, and the experience has restored my faith in the return of 1980s collectibles! I thought I’d share some of my favorite finds with you, especially those with interesting lines and curves. Some were a few dollars. And then there are those pieces that are worth paying a bit more for, especially if they aren’t that easy to track down. Like the retro Toyo vase above, which I purchased from Etsy shop Vintage Lanie.
The ’80s Connection: Skylar Strickland
Recently I’ve had the pleasure of striking up a correspondence with Skylar Strickland, an expert on the topic of 1980s design. His vast knowledge on the decade’s best interiors, decor trends and product design quickly became evident, especially when he gave me a glimpse of his extensive collection of design links, images and finds. While growing up in Florida, Skylar lived in a home filled with cutting-edge ’80s treasures. Meanwhile, many of us who were kids during that time grew up in locations where that detailed level of artful 1980s design was… well, let’s just say it wasn’t happening. What was it like being at the center of the decade’s design best? Let’s find out by talking with an expert who isn’t afraid to share his opinion…
Bring on the Beige…
Ever since I painted my fireplace in shades of tan and beige, I’ve been a bit obsessed with these ’70s/’80s hues. Whether they veer to the gray end of the spectrum or they’re golden a la camel, they’re perfect for fall. Today I’ve rounded up some retro finds in warm tones. Read on for more details…
’80s Set Design: The Neptune Room from Jaws 3-D
Oh, to be a kid in the ’80s! Only then was it appropriate to take a car full of second graders to the movie theater so they could enjoy a viewing of Jaws 3-D, complete with floating limbs, maimed corpses and brutal shark attacks. OK, so this is nothing compared to the actual terror of today’s “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel, but it’s still funny to me that so many of my friends (and I) were allowed to enjoy repeat viewings of this film while in grade school. Hey, it was rated PG! I give it an A+ for set design, which I didn’t fully appreciate as a child…
Geometric ’80s-Style Wall Art
Happy Monday, everyone! We thought we’d start out the week with an ode to ’80s-style wall art. While researching a blog post on wall murals for my Decoist gig, I came across some amazing 1980s-inspired geometric creations. I’ve written several posts on wall decals, but I never imagined there were options out there that channeled my favorite decade. So without further ado, today we spotlight colorful artistic finds that celebrate ’80s geometry…
Colorful ’80s Design!
Lately I’ve been obsessed with colorful ’80s design. I’m not necessarily talking Memphis-Milano style here, although there certainly is some overlap. I’m thinking of those contemporary homes of the 1980s that featured white walls, hardwood floors, and an abundance of radiant accents. Modern art, geometric motifs and glass block were a few signature staples of this style, as was a confetti-inspired festivity that looked good enough to eat. And in the fashion realm, it was all about the vibrant knits and geometric jewelry. Let’s take a closer look…
’80s Interior Design by Jason D. Lesonic
When I first learned of Jason D. Lesonic’s ’80s-fabulous apartment, I was sure of two things: 1) Rarely does an interior so seamlessly blend authentic bold elements of 1980s style, and 2) I had to feature the apartment on Mirror80! Today we feature Mirror80’s first guest post, written by Jason D. Lesonic himself! Take it away, Jason…
