Today we revel in the Memphis-meets-Deco world of the 1991 film Soapdish, the story of a soap opera leading lady (played by Sally Field) whose real life drama rivals the absurd plot of her daytime drama! Not only is this film smart, hilarious and well-written, it features over-the-top set design that is a glorious mishmash of retro motifs. It’s elegant vintage meets postmodern. It’s tropical meets swanky. Ready for a closer look?…

A Tour of My 1980s Kitchen
Hi Everyone! Today I’m sharing a tour of my 1980s kitchen (the house was built in ’81). Truth: the space has been remodeled since the 1980s, but there are still plenty of ’80s elements, like the garden window above the sink and the pairing of cream and black! When we moved in two years ago, this room became my very favorite in the house.

An Interview with Halt and Catch Fire Set Decorator Lance Totten
Today I’m thrilled to share Mirror80’s latest interview: a chat with Halt and Catch Fire Set Decorator Lance Totten. Read on as he shares his favorite ’70s and ’80s design resources, as well as the importance of authenticity. Design Inspiration: Colorful ’80s Interiors
There are many ’80s design trends that influence my style as I make attempts to infuse my place with personality (stripes, borders and plants, to name a few). Even if you don’t adopt this look in your home, it can inspire a range of vignettes, such as tablescapes.

A Dreamy ’80s Deco Still Life Shoot
Today I’m sharing a few snapshots from my latest photo shoot. The subjects of these still life pics are ’80s Deco ceramics! If you caught Mirror80’s latest post on the set design of the 1982 film Tootsie, you saw plenty of sleek ceramics in shades of lavender and pink. The movie inspired me to line up my ’80s vases and swans and photograph them. The flowers you see above are peonies, and once the petals started falling, the shoot took on kind of a dreamy quality, so I went with it. Here are a few more images…enjoy!
’80s Movie Style: Tootsie
Today’s post is dedicated to the pink and purple fabulousness that’s painted all over the film Tootsie. OK, so the whole movie isn’t doused in shades of purple and pink. But these colors are used to turn female stereotypes on their ear, taking center stage at some of the most empowering moments for Tootsie/Dorothy (played by Dustin Hoffman) and Julie (Jessica Lange).
Decadent Pastels
This week at Mirror80, it’s all about the pastels. Rather than using a modern minimalist approach, we’re taking things in a decadent direction. From a post dedicated to the pink and purple Deco-modern interiors of the 1982 film Tootsie to an original photo shoot featuring a variety of 1980s ceramics, this week’s posts will offer a richly layered approach to pastel design. Today we’ve put together a sneak peek of things to come, as well as pulled images from past Mirror80 posts that celebrate the style at hand. Read on for details…
