I’m going to be honest: I’m an awards show junkie. I love nothing more than preparing a table full of party food and eating it over the course of four hours while watching the Oscars, or this coming weekend’s Golden Globes. In planning the table decor for next Sunday night, I gathered the images above to create a little mood board. There’s something of a fantasy element to all of this glitz, so this week we’ll be exploring the dreamy side of ’80s style. Today we start with all things shiny!

Neon Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas
This weekend I began wrapping my Christmas presents! Last year I used paper in muted colors, ribbon in rich hues, and bits of jewelry as decorative accents. This year I decided to go all out with a full-on color explosion. And it’s funny how just a few bright touches do the trick. Since we’re in the middle of a neon revival and neon was a true ’80s trend, why not make it a fluorescent holiday? Read on for more details…
’80s Neon Finds!
To say that neon has made a comeback is an understatement. Not only has it found its way back to our wardrobes, it’s even put its stamp on the world of interior design. In fact, I recently came across a DIY project for incorporating neon-dipped pine cones into Thanksgiving place settings. Yes, we are a neon-crazy culture at this point in time! Let’s see where it all began, shall we?… I thought I’d visit Etsy and round up some amazing vintage neon finds.
An ’80s Floral Statement
Here at Mirror80 we’ve featured an array of floral arrangements in 1980s hues. From a heart-shaped vase filled with stargazer lilies to a blue ’80s Deco container holding purple iris, these creations have often screamed ’80s! Today’s selection is simple and modern, yet it combines two of our favorite ’80s trademarks: calla lillies and metallic vases.

Pic Fix: An ’80s Modern Christmas
This week at Mirror80 we get into the Holiday spirit by revisiting ’80s seasonal style. Today’s images are brought to you by the 1987 film Less Than Zero, a haunting story of drug abuse and loss based on the book by Brett Easton Ellis. While the movie is far from the beacon of warm fuzzy Holiday fun, its breathtaking interiors provide us with a glimpse of posh ’80s winter decor. If you lived in a California mansion decorated by a cutting edge interior designer in the mid-late ’80s, perhaps your Christmas tree and centerpieces would look like this…
Pic Fix: 1980s Teen Product Ads
This week Mirror80 pays homage to the wonderful world of teen-targeted media. If you think ’80s graphic and product design had eye-catching appeal, you can bet design efforts were cranked up a few notches to grab the attention of teenagers. Imagine the set of Saved by the Bell, then imagine if it were edible. That’s right–teen products looked good enough to eat (which is a bit scary since many of them were drugstore items). Graphic designers packed advertisements with candy forms and colors. Here are a few of our favorites, taken from the November 1990 issue of Teen Magazine, starting with the ad for Malibu Musk, shown above.
1980s Interior Design Styles
The world of 1980s interior design is a richly complex one. From metallic accents to striking angles and curves, many ’80s motifs are surprisingly modern–even timeless–making them easy to integrate into today’s design. When I first wrote this post three years ago, the ’80s revival hadn’t officially hit the world of design. Only a handful of images featuring 1980s interiors were available online. Not to mention, many people still cringed when hearing the phrase “’80s furniture.” Oh how times have changed, thanks to phenomena like the Memphis-Milano revival and the ’80s Tumblr! Time to update this post with new images that prove 1980s style is reaching a whole new generation of design enthusiasts. Here’s our breakdown of 1980s interior design styles:

A 1980s Office Makeover
After reading the title of this post, you might think we’ve taken an office packed with ’80s decor and given it a more modern look. Not entirely so. The point of this interior design DIY was to take an office–in this case, the home of Mirror80–and give it a streamlined nod to the ’80s.
