Happy April Fool’s Day! Before we officially move into a new month, let’s take a look back at March. From SXSW to a home office tour, there was plenty going on in my world these last few weeks. I also took time to focus on a few retro-modern design trends, from a new take on ’70s style to the intricacies of the still life movement. And as always, I’ve enjoyed reveling in some nostalgia here on Mirror80 via photos and movie stills from the Decade of Decadence. Some highlights, in case you missed anything…
It’s true, folks–I was a kid in the ’80s. Which means I’m old enough to have lived through some of the retro trends that are now re-emerging. It also means that by the time I was 12, I was building my own collection of ’80s power jewelry. Thick silver chains, heavy bracelets and Deco-style earrings–you name it! Yes, while still playing with dolls (which I never would have admitted), I was leaving for school in the morning looking like a high-power career woman on her way to the nightclub. But now that I’m out of the tween phase, it’s time to give retro power necklaces a second look…
In March I began corresponding with musician and artist Cory You, and we instantly bonded over our love for ’80s design. As the months went by, I began to see just how much the 1980s influenced Cory’s creative works. In fact, I was blown away by his drive to create on a daily basis. Seriously, this man is always creating new images, sounds and looks! His constant search for unique ’80s visuals and thrift store finds regularly inspired me, and when I realized what an expert he was at mining my favorite decade for its most interesting elements, I knew he would be my next ’80s Connection interview.
