Friday Video Pick: “Bulletproof” by La Roux

November 18, 2011 by Kate Leave a Comment

La Roux "Bulletproof"

In the spirit of ’80s graphic design, we set out to select a mind-blowingly stylish video for today’s Friday Video Pick. A video that could be a Trapper Keeper if it materialized into a school supply. There was only one choice for us: “Bulletproof” by La Roux! It may not be from the ’80s or even an ’80s copycat, but moments of ’80s influence can’t be denied. From the black and white grids to the floating geometric shapes, it’s hard to keep up with the visual changes packed into this 3 1/2 minute work of art! The beginning even features a backdrop that evokes the color and pattern combinations present in the design of ’80s powerhouse collective The Memphis Group.

This week Mirror80 takes a look at the attention-grabbing graphic design styles that emerged during the 1980s, an attention-grabbing decade! While a variety of techniques abounded, today we examine some of the boldest. The image above, recently designed by Andrew Guengerich to evoke the ’80s, was inspired by Trapper Keeper patterns and motifs. We continue by examining 1980s collectibles and media-related items, noting a variety of graphic design styles that captivated the decade’s consumers.

We know an ’80s interior design revival is headed our way, but when it comes to decor, ’80s style hasn’t exactly been embraced by large numbers of antique dealers and vintage furniture shop owners. Yet. But have no fear–while you’re waiting for ’80s interior design finds to become readily available, there ARE places to look for your next purchase, as well as many sources of inspiration. Here are some of our favorites!

1980s Interior Design Styles

November 1, 2011 by Kate 7 Comments

The world of 1980s interior design is a richly complex one. From metallic accents to striking angles and curves, many ’80s motifs are surprisingly modern–even timeless–making them easy to integrate into today’s design. When I first wrote this post three years ago, the ’80s revival hadn’t officially hit the world of design. Only a handful of images featuring 1980s interiors were available online. Not to mention, many people still cringed when hearing the phrase “’80s furniture.” Oh how times have changed, thanks to phenomena like the Memphis-Milano revival and the ’80s Tumblr! Time to update this post with new images that prove 1980s style is reaching a whole new generation of design enthusiasts. Here’s our breakdown of 1980s interior design styles:

An ’80s Interior Design Revival?

Are we headed for a full-fledged 1980s interior design revival? Mirror80’s opinion: Absolutely! And we’re not the only ones who think so. Click on the link below to view the article “Retro Riches” by Stephen Lacey–a piece that illuminates the excitement of an ’80s redux in the area of design and decor:

1980s Interior Design: The ’80s/Mid-Century Connection

A still from the 1986 film Pretty In Pink

Have you ever watched one of the movies you loved as a kid and been shocked by how well it held up, in story, “look,” or entertainment factor? While recently re-watching both Pretty In Pink (1986, dir. Howard Deutch) and Earth Girls Are Easy (1988, dir. Julien Temple), I was struck by one major factor: the production design. Both films combine the bold pizazz of ’80s Memphis-Milano style with the hues and clean lines of ’50s/’60s Modern design.

One of the most exciting aspects of ’80s style was the fashion! While the style world was quick to dismiss ’80s fads in the years immediately following the decade, trends that many thought would never see the light of day slowly but surely reappeared. Rompers, stretch belts, and tribal patterns are just a few of the many ’80s re-dos that have graced clothing racks and the pages of magazines in recent years. Mirror80 enjoys spotlighting the style of our favorite decade. Here are five fashion-fabulous posts from the past year:
