With Memphis-Milano style back on our radar, a new wave of artists, designers and curators are celebrating geometric forms, interesting patterns and bold color combinations. New Memphis style has a modern edge, sometimes a tad more minimal than its ’80s predecessor, and at other times even more vivid. Here are some recent projects, photos and offerings that celebrate Memphis style…

A Totem Photo Shoot: Memphis Stackables
Happy Monday–today should be a colorful one! A new week brings new possibilities, so I’m sharing Mirror80’s latest photo shoot. It’s a blend of Memphis-Milano style and sculptural totem forms, and I’m calling it Stackables. For awhile now, I’ve been creating tabletop totems at home. My favorite items to use in stackables: vases, bowls, and dollar store items (such as ping pong balls, rubber band balls and other sporty items).
Inspired By: Memphis-Milano Forms
Lately I’ve been completely inspired by Memphis-style forms in architecture, furniture design, artwork and more. There’s something so whimsical about the way clean lines, bold curves and candy colors combine. There’s also something dreamy about Memphis-Milano motifs, and nothing piques my interest more than the Plaza dressing table and stool by Michael Graves, shown above and below in images from Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Interiorator. I’m getting ready to tackle a wall art project, so today I’m sharing a few of my sources of inspiration…
New Memphis Gift Wrap
For a colorful take on holiday gift wrap, revel in New Memphis style this season! In fact, the Memphis-Milano revival is quite liberating, as it celebrates hand-drawn style, as well as shapes such as squiggles and zigzags. In other words, the pressure to be perfect is gone. The whimsical trumps the precise any day! By creating colorful inserts for basic organza gift bags, you can take gift card wrapping to the next level…
A New Memphis Roundup
It’s a great time to be a fan of ’80s design, because the New Memphis movement is going full force. Creative designers and bloggers are producing many products and projects filled with Memphis-Milano style, but with a modern twist. Today I’m rounding up some of my favorites…
Pumpkin Painting: New Memphis Motifs
Happy Fall! It’s the first official day of the new season, so I’m sharing a pumpkin painting project with you…and it’s filled with New Memphis style! Not to mention, it couldn’t be easier to pull off. My inspiration: the Memphis Milano-inspired designs that are increasingly covering new pillows, blankets, clothing and ceramics.
New Memphis Decor
Happy Friday! Today I’m rounding up a collection of New Memphis decor that celebrates the power of pattern and geometry. These aren’t Memphis-Milano pieces from the ’80s. They represent a new take on the bold style we all know and love. And there’s a LOT of it around these days, so much so that retail chains like West Elm are even giving a nod to the look in their new collections. From the work of Etsy artisans to the prints of Society6 artists, there’s a lot of color and form to enjoy. Here goes…

Target Goes New Memphis
With New Memphis design and still life style going strong in the realm of product photography, it’s no surprise that big brands are wholeheartedly embracing the look for their large campaigns. The latest is Target, whose back to college shoot is covered with grids, sprinkles, squiggles and geo flair. And since one of my favorite pastimes is “spot the Memphis,” I had to share these photos as soon as they came across my radar…
DIY Project: A Memphis-Style Vase
Happy Monday! Let’s start off the week with a super-easy DIY project that can add an instant dose of New Memphis flair to your interior. For a few dollars, you can transform a simple glass vase into a Memphis-style receptacle that’s perfect for holding tropical greenery. The supply of choice: contact paper. I’m drawn to speckled contact paper patterns that look like ’80s doctors’ office laminate countertop designs! Industrial patterns and faux granite prints work well here. Read on for all the details…
