So Sottsass!
I have artist Dominic Joyce to thank for this post! Last week he brought today’s featured installation to my attention… London decor retailer Darkroom is currently honoring the work of Memphis-Milano designer Ettore Sottsass with an in-store tribute featuring a limited edition collection. The participants include the likes of Studiopepe, Jamie Julien-Brown, Stone Theatre and more. Titled “So Sottsass,” the installation includes upscale items such as marble trays, totem lights and hand painted ceramics, along with more affordable offerings such as wrapping paper. The ’80s Connection: Skylar Strickland
Recently I’ve had the pleasure of striking up a correspondence with Skylar Strickland, an expert on the topic of 1980s design. His vast knowledge on the decade’s best interiors, decor trends and product design quickly became evident, especially when he gave me a glimpse of his extensive collection of design links, images and finds. While growing up in Florida, Skylar lived in a home filled with cutting-edge ’80s treasures. Meanwhile, many of us who were kids during that time grew up in locations where that detailed level of artful 1980s design was… well, let’s just say it wasn’t happening. What was it like being at the center of the decade’s design best? Let’s find out by talking with an expert who isn’t afraid to share his opinion…
Planning Mirror80’s 3rd Birthday Party…
We at Mirror80 love a good party! Especially a foodie party… With Mirror80’s 3rd birthday on the horizon, we thought we’d commemorate the event with a confetti- and color-themed bash. With influences ranging from Memphis-Milano style to ’80s yuppie culture, the party possibilities are endless. Our biggest sources of inspiration have been simple and timeless 1980s party decorations (of the colorful variety), as well as ’80s modern abstract art.
Geometric ’80s-Style Wall Art
Happy Monday, everyone! We thought we’d start out the week with an ode to ’80s-style wall art. I’ve written several posts on wall decals, but I never imagined there were options out there that channeled my favorite decade. So without further ado, today we spotlight colorful artistic finds that celebrate ’80s geometry…
Colorful ’80s Design!
Lately I’ve been obsessed with colorful ’80s design. I’m not necessarily talking Memphis-Milano style here, although there certainly is some overlap. I’m thinking of those contemporary homes of the 1980s that featured white walls, hardwood floors, and an abundance of radiant accents. Modern art, geometric motifs and glass block were a few signature staples of this style, as was a confetti-inspired festivity that looked good enough to eat. And in the fashion realm, it was all about the vibrant knits and geometric jewelry. Let’s take a closer look…
The ’80s Connection: Cory You
In March I began corresponding with musician and artist Cory You, and we instantly bonded over our love for ’80s design. As the months went by, I began to see just how much the 1980s influenced Cory’s creative works. In fact, I was blown away by his drive to create on a daily basis. Seriously, this man is always creating new images, sounds and looks! His constant search for unique ’80s visuals and thrift store finds regularly inspired me, and when I realized what an expert he was at mining my favorite decade for its most interesting elements, I knew he would be my next ’80s Connection interview. So without further ado, let’s meet Cory You!…
